We’ve been using these filters for over a year and I’ve had no issues. I’m amazed that they block the smell (we keep our compost on the counter) and they fit great. We typically replace them every ~4 months. As for the plastic they come in, I actually take my soft plastics to a hard-to-recycle center in town, so that’s not been an issue for me.

Hi there! We’ve found that activated charcoal found in filters like these can be safely composted!

    Wrapped in plastic

I was really disappointed to see that these filters came wrapped in a non-recyclable plastic packaging, especially when it’s for a compost bin (usually people that compost want things that can be composted or recycled.) I also second that my filters have grown mold a couple of times, and very quickly, and my food was not touching the top or in the bin for very long, which they say can be the cause of the mold. Fortunately I just rinsed it off with the garden hose and let it air dry and it was fine after that. While I love my bin and the fact that it doesn’t smell, I can’t give them as high of a review as I would like to for these reasons.

I did not check for size before purchasing. They CAN be cut so all is not lost!

These were too big for my bin, but I cut them into the right size and put the scraps at the bottom of my trash can to mitigate smell there and it works!

    Mixed results

The positive: our countertop compost does not smell.
The negative: these filters don’t last as long as advertised and seem to have a tendency to grow mold.

    Are the compost filters compostable?

      Admin Ellie Mersereau

Hi Liam! We’re hoping that at some point these filters will be 100% compostable, but as the manufacturer is still testing the amount of time that they take to break down, as of now they should surpass the compost and head to the trash.
