Tru Earth
When Tru Earth co-founder Ryan was expecting his third child with his wife Kathleen, he started a new morning routine with his children, aged 4 and 3 at the time. They'd wake up, head to the kitchen for a glass of milk, and watch YouTube videos on toys! This was one of the best parts of the day for Ryan but he couldn't ignore how much plastic he noticed in these videos, from the products themselves to the packaging they came in.
Ryan, inspired by the idea of reducing plastic, called up his good friend Brad, a serial entrepreneur. Brad shared that he had an extended-family member with a patent on an eco-friendly laundry detergent, where an entire jug could fit into packaging the size of an iPhone. Brad, Ryan, and their childhood friend Kevin decided they needed to see it to believe it and tried these magic laundry strips for themselves. And they really worked!
Kevin set up a webpage for the product, and they determined that 150 subscription orders in 150 days would be the push they needed to invest resources into this idea. At the end of 30 days, they had 1,500 subscribers! They knew immediately that the world needed this product; an alternative to wasteful plastic laundry packaging that actually got your clothes clean. And so, Tru Earth was born, a laundry strip made for the modern consumer that wants to live more sustainably, but doesn't know where to start.
