Paraben Free

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalate Free

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Sulfate Free

Sulfates are synthetic chemical ingredients commonly used in beauty products and household cleaners, like shampoos and dish soaps. You can usually identify sulfates in an ingredients list by looking out for the most common types: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLC) and Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLES). These chemicals, often derived from petroleum, are used to help form the “lather” we’re used to seeing in our beauty and cleaning products. When used in the shower or sink, these chemicals can flow through the pipes and into our waterways. Synthetic sulfates have been linked to allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and hair loss, and some studies suggest they contain carcinogenic ingredients.

Sustainability Features

Origin

  • Produced and packaged in Chicago, Illinois, USA

Ingredients

  • Unscented: Vegetable Soap [Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Sunflowerate, Glycerin, Water, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil] Lemon: Vegetable Soap [Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Sunflowerate, Glycerin, Water, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil], Organic Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil. *lemon essential oil naturally contains the potential allergen limonene.
  • Additional info: sodium cocoate is the chemical name of coconut oil that has been saponified (aka 'made into soap'). Sodium sunflowerate is the chemical name of sunflower seed oil that has been saponified. There will be some coconut and sunflower seed oils left in the soap after they are saponified, due to the fact that Meliora uses sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process. Leaving these excess oils in the soap ensures there is NO remaining lye in the finished product, and gives the soap its lather and moisture. This process is also called 'superfatting'. Glycerin is naturally created when the oils are converted into soap–and helps to keep skin soft, and is an effective solvent, making it great for dissolving stains and dirt. Water is used in the soapmaking process to dissolve the lye, and then is dried out over several weeks, resulting in a hard soap bar with very little water leftover. There is ~5% water leftover in these soap bars, compared to liquid soap that contains ~60% water.

Meliora means “better” in Latin, and that’s what these cleaning products are made to be. They’re conscious about choosing ingredients that are effective, safe for the home and body, and cause no trouble for Mother Earth after the chores are said and done. Just used for the first time yesterday and it is amazing! I love the scent and the bar is actually larger than I expected it to be so I am sure it will last a while. Definitely think it is worth the money and goes great with the zero-waste abrasive scrubber I also bought from here. From here on out I am switching to solid dish soap

I was skeptical about a bar soap being able to tackle greasy dishes but decided to try it because I am committed to getting rid of household single use plastics. I was pleasantly surprised and know that it will last a good, long time as well as smelling great and cleaning the dishes perfectly. Easy to rinse, too.

This was my first time trying a solid dish soap, and I expected to not like it, but I very much DO like it! It doesn’t foam up like the liquids, so don’t expect that, but it performs just as well – Cleans well and rinses more easily than the liquids. All this but without the nasty plastic bottle!!!

Washes dishes great. I’m clumsy and spill everything. This fit in the full circle bubble dish (it sticks out a bit but I don’t mind that) and works well with the sponge.

I read a lot of comments saying it wasn’t good with greasy items, and that could not be more wrong. I don’t use a ton of oil with my food, so maybe that’s why, but it works great for me!

  16. Dawn Ledbetter

    Get past the outer product

    Dawn Ledbetter (verified owner)

I had read some reviews that said that the dish soap left a residue, so I was concerned when I first used the product and felt like there was a waxy residue. BUT after I used it a few times, I didn’t experience a residue, and it soaped up and cleaned very well. I think the initial problem was due to the outside of the bar having contained more of some ingredients than others. Don’t judge this soap by the initial washings!

Also i loved that i could place the bar on the edge on the counter by the sink, and it stuck. It’s very easy to wipe around, and super easy to rub your sponge on it to get a much soap as you want, because the bar doesn’t move!

Officially converted to solid dish soap because of this product. This soap is long lasting and suds really well, I only use a dish brush or occasionally a Swedish dish cloth to clean my dishes and there have really only been a couple of instances where I preferred to use liquid castile soap. Highly recommend!

    My favorite solid dish soap

    amanda-8809 (verified owner)

We’ve tried three different solid dish soaps, they were all good, but this one is the best. I find that it lasts longer if we do more dishes at the same time, instead of soaping up the sponge and just doing a couple dishes. It suds up better than others. Combined with the sponges we get from Grove Collaborative (they create better suds than other sponges we’ve tried) we can get these soap pucks to last quite awhile. They are attractive too!

  25. Corinna Low

Great soap that you should try!

    Corinna Low (verified owner)

The dish soap cuts through grease effectively and leaves dishes squeaky clean! It has a nice lemon scent and a little soap goes a long way; I just gave the top of the soap a little swipe or two with the dish scrub brush and it is enough to clean several dishes before I need a little more. This is going to last me longer than I anticipated, so it is worth the price. I like this better than the liquid castile soap I was using because it doesn’t come in any plastic packaging and it seems like you just need to use less product in this solid form. This was my first time purchasing solid castile soap and I will definitely buy it again when I run out.

I bought this dish soap to replace plastic bottles. It works great. I just rub it with a sponge or brush. The unexpected thing I like about it is you just reach out and get it on your sponge. No need to struggle with opening the plastic bottle, dealing with the soap plug that formed from the last use, and no big squirt of dish soap when you only want a little. No plastic and less waste!

I was most concerned about the soap getting wet and it all melt away, however that is not the case it dries up really fast and has maintained its shape. It is easy to use: just
wet whatever you clean your dishes with and than rub the top of the soap bar and you got bubbles.
Just wanted to update my review: This soap is awesome and it is very long lasting for its size. It can last a family of 5 a solid month and can stretch to 2 months. That’s breakfast & dinner at home very often!

Cleans well which is what you want first and foremost from a soap, right? I was using liquid dish soap in my ‘Bubble Up Ceramic Dish’ but this happened to be just the right size for that dish too! At first, I would take it out every few days to rotate it and make sure the bottom dried so it wouldn’t get gross. Since then, I’ve accidentally gotten it stuck but there’s still no sign of the soap getting gross. Still, I might not keep it in that dish next time. Where I would normally add a few drops to the running water for a sink-soak, I just run this under the faucet for a couple seconds- still bubbles up okay and my dishes come out nice and clean. At first, my husband thought it was crazy to use this instead of liquid soap- he thought we should still have both. But now he sees that this works just as well, saves the Earth from unnecessary plastics/packaging, and saves us from having to rinse/recycle!

This product works great. Cleans dishes nicely. Smells good too, but not too strong. Definitely buying again!

    Great dish washing

    Cathie (verified owner)

I just tried these for the first time and love them! I already had the ceramic cup and brush, so really like just popping these in lathering up to wash dishes. The Castile soap cuts grease better than I expected. You’ll want a dish under your soap block and/or cup as it’s a little messy. Well worth the ease of cleaning and lack of plastic!!!

Really nice introduction to dish blocks for me

    angeladinghere (verified owner)

This dish block works just as well as liquid dish soap, overall a very positive first experience with zero waste dish soap. Totally recommend!

I was a little apprehensive of trying a solid dish soap, but I actually love it so much more than I thought. It suds up so nicely and I love it in combination with the dish brush that I also bought from earth hero!

    No more Dawn

    BEACHLIFE (verified owner)

So I started using this product this week and love it. It works so well with the walnut sponge and the brush I bought a month or so ago from here and suds up easily and rinses well. My new to go to soap in place of Dawn.

    Easy to use!

    pkleven14 (verified owner)

I was nervous how easy it would be to swipe a dish sponge over it and get enough lather…turns out, so easy that it makes reaching for a bottle of soap sound difficult!! And plenty of suds with a few swipes. From my short experience thus far, I recommend putting it in a flat-bottomed soap dish with a spongey, soap saver on the bottom for friction and it will easily stay in place as you swipe for suds! This functionality was actually the thing I was most uncertain about when purchasing, so glad it works so great!

My husband washes the dishes. He loves this product and has felt that it has also lead to him using less water (!!). He recommends.

No plastic, smells great, works as great as dawn dish soap, and use less. We just swirl our brush on top and get to scrubbing! We bought a 3 pack awhile ago and have barely made a dent in the first bar. Such an incredible purchase. Only dish soap I’m buying from now on.

    My new dish soap!

I just take a wet dish cloth and swirl it on top of the soap bar. It suds up and works great! I’m really impressed and happy to ditch the plastic bottle!

Sorry Dawn, I am switching ;)

    Becca (verified owner)

I have only used dawn soap for most of my life. This is my first go at castile soap and I love this one! It does everything my Dawn soap does but I use way less soap then I used to. I simply leave it by my sink, take my brush and swirl it around a time or two on top of the soap and I am off to cleaning. My husband also was shocked at how much he liked it as well. I definitely recommend and once my 7 oz bar does finish (I assume that will be awhile) I will purchase again from this company via Earthhero 🙂

I love this soap. So far it’s lasted me longer than a bottle of dish soap, and my dishes seem cleaner than when using regular dish soap.

I’ve been trying to reduce the number of disposable plastic containers I purchase. This soap is great! It cleans dishes and hands well and doesn’t have any plastic packaging at all 🙂

I bought this and have been using it for a couple weeks now. It works incredibly well to clean my dishes. It also comes completely in paper, which I threw into the compost bin. I am absolutely in love. It lathers easily, and it a lot easier to store compared to traditional liquid dish soap.
