Flying Bird Botanicals

Tea is the second most consumed beverage on the globe and it's no wonder - drinking tea can bring about a moment of peace, serve as a soothing home remedy, or offer a boost of energy. While there may be no right way to drink tea, there are options for those looking to enjoy an ethical cup that's also gentle on the planet.

Inspired by the simple ritual of brewing tea, Scout Urling began offering hand-blended teas at farmers' markets, a business that later bloomed into Flying Bird Botanicals in 2012. A small family-owned business based in Bellingham, WA, Flying Bird Botanicals was founded to create a sustainable and ethical tea option that everyone can enjoy. They care about every step of the process, studiously researching prime growing locations, ideating on farming best practices, and staying up-to-date on what makes food ethical and sustainable. Their organically farmed and wildcrafted herbs like lemon balm, skullcap, and hawthorn flowers are carefully blended to create delicious flavors and soothing home remedies that delight the senses.

Flying Bird Botanicals bridges the relationship between people, plants, and healing by sourcing ethically, packaging sustainably, and caring deeply. Flying Bird Botanicals prioritizes local sourcing as much as possible, from the farmers that grow their herbs to the artists that design their packaging. Flying Bird Botanicals uses USDA and WSDA Certified Organic ingredients in their tea blends. Any ingredients that are not certified organic are wildcrafted from pristine, natural environments. The majority of their herbs are sourced close to home in the Pacific Northwest to limit carbon emissions even at the early stages of their supply chain. When sourcing ingredients internationally, Flying Bird ensures they buy from Fair Trade Certified farms to continue their commitment to sustainable, fair, and safe farming practices. This means no GMOs or pesticides are used in the growing process as to not disrupt the ecosystem. As a company inspired by ritual and spirit, Flying Bird elevates ancestral wisdom throughout their company. That's why they incorporate heirloom farming and herbal traditions passed through generations in every product. Their delicious hot chocolates feature sustainably harvested, single-origin heirloom Ecuadorian cacao called Arriba Nacional, which remains unroasted for optimal floral notes. Their products are packaged plastic-free (not always easy to find in the tea world!), which means there's no need for pesky plastic bags around your favorite steeped beverage. Teabags are also often made of plastic, which can leech microplastics into the beverage and ultimately make their way into the environment and our bodies. Flying Bird only uses biodegradable, pyramid-shaped tea bags that can be commercially composted to avoid any micro waste. The silken plant-based material, called polylactic acid (or PLA, for short), is a plastic-free and allergen-free material that is also free of BPA and phthalates to further prevent the absorption of any chemicals. All this goodness is packed in tins made from U.S. recycled (and recyclable) steel which are sealed ultrasonically – no glue involved! Finally, these tins are wrapped in artfully designed packaging printed in Seattle on unbleached and textured recycled paper.
