About the Company

TerraCycle

What is truly zero waste? Most of us recycle what we can–but what about everything else that can’t go into your curbside collection bin?

TerraCycle uses their free collections programs and their unique Zero Waste Boxes to recycle, upcycle, or reuse hard-to-recycle waste from communities across the country–instead of sending it to the incinerator or landfill. By treating trash as a material with true value, TerraCycle is changing our global waste system from a linear one to a more circular one–where things are designed to last for years, then be remade into awesome new products (not sent to the landfill!)

To get started, first pick the type of “trash” in your life you want to tackle. From cigarette butts to candy wrappers and even cleaning supplies, choose where you think the most non-recyclable waste in your life is coming from. Next, pick your size box. Do you live alone, or are you part of a family of 5? Once you get the ideal box for your life, simply start collecting the accepted waste to send back to TerraCycle!

Live the zero waste life of your dreams, without giving up what you love, thanks to TerraCycle.

  2. Question

    MAGGIE OLEARY

Does Terra return my box after they empty it? If not how is the empty box handled? If I have to buy another box after I return it, couldn’t you sell my used one at a discount?

Hi Maggie! Each TerraCycle box is a one-time buy. It may seem silly to spend that much on an empty cardboard box, but the cost is really for the service of sorting and processing these hard to recycle items. TerraCycle recycles all used boxes. While reusing them is a great idea, a lot can happen to them in the shipping process. It’s important that the boxes stay sturdy so that no waste falls on out while en route to the processing facility! 🙂

Are you saying I was supposed to empty the grounds out of the pods? I just threw them in as is.

That’s alright, Judith! TerraCycle will compost any leftover grounds in these pods. 🙂

  4. Question

I know to take the lid off pods and empty coffee grounds. But there is a paper filter in the pods I have. Does that need to be removed? By me?

Hi Shannon – TerraCycle will actually compost any coffee grounds if you leave those in and the top is aluminum, which they can also recycle! Feel free to leave the paper filter inside the pod as it will likely be composted along with the grounds. 🙂

  6. Question

    Liz D.

How are the pods recycled? Is there anything that’s made using the recycled materials?

      Admin EarthHero

Hi Liz! Great question. Upon arriving at TerraCycle’s recycling facility, the pods are separated based on material type and any left-over coffee grounds are composted. The aluminum lids are smelted into new metal products and the plastic cups are melted down. Using these newly recycled materials, TerraCycle also makes new products like outdoor furniture, toiletry bags, containers, and more! 😀

  7. Question

    Tom

So to clarify – 1) we do not need to take the lid off the cups or empty grounds? and 2) Do you accept little coffee creamer (3/8 fl oz) cups also in these boxes?

      Admin EarthHero

Hi Tom – you do not need to take the lid off or empty the grounds. TerraCycle just does not accept loose grounds, so just keep it inside of the pods! Unfortunately, this box is just for coffee or tea pods/disks. Other accessories like creamer cups should not be included. We do have a TerraCycle Break Room Box that helps with all of those coffee and tea accessories, however (https://earthhero.com/products/home/terracycle-terracycle-break-room-zero-waste-box/)! Thanks for double-checking! 🙂
