Plastic Bank Partner
This brand works with Plastic Bank to measure, reduce, and offset their plastic usage by funding recycling and ocean cleanup efforts in underdeveloped communities around the world. This means that in addition to helping clean up our oceans, they’re also investing in recycling infrastructure in developing nations. A brand’s partnership with Plastic Bank involves offsetting various amounts of their plastic usage, from partial, to full (plastic neutral) or even offsetting more plastic than they produce (plastic negative).
B Corp
The B Lab is a third-party, non-profit organization that certifies companies as socially and environmentally responsible. B Corps are businesses that go above and beyond traditional business models and aim to create positive change in the world through their practices. These companies must meet rigorous transparency and accountablity standards, while doing what is best for people and the environment.
BPA Free
Products that are labeled as BPA free do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic products. Studies on BPA exposure have shown that high levels of BPA could lead to hormone disruption, effects on behavior and brain function, reproductive problems, breast cancer, heart disease, infertility, and more.
Plant Based Resin
Plant Based Resins are used as an alternative to fully-synthetic plastics. Instead of using Petroleum as the main base ingredient to form plastic, some companies have started replacing a portion of the ingredients with plant and vegetable extracts. This lowers the amount of resources extracted to create purely synthetic products, and often provides a use for agricultural byproducts such as corn or flax. Some plant based resins are made from 100% plant materials, and can be composted in industrial facilities. EarthHero recommends checking with your local compost facility to determine which items are safe to compost.
Recycled Plastic
Recycled plastic utilizes salvaged post-industrial plastic scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers, and transforms them into new products. The containers are sorted, crushed, and then heated to form resins, which are liquid plastics that can harden into new shapes. These resins can be molded and used to create anything from carpet to outdoor furniture. Recycling plastic lowers the amount of petroleum extracted and the production of greenhouse gasses associated with first-time plastic production. Plus, by using these existing materials, we’re benefiting from the original energy and resources spent to create them in the first place, while diverting waste from the landfill.
The Walnut Scrubber Sponge by Full Circle is a unique and powerful way to keep your house clean. With a material composed of walnut shells (don't worry, it isn't allergenic!), scrubbing those tough spots has never been easier–or more environmentally-responsible! The sponge is also double duty! One side is absorbent and the other is abrasive, making the sponge perfect for any cleaning situation. Harness the power of the walnut with this cutting-edge product!

We love these sponges. They are durable and long lasting. Only thing that bums us out is that they are shipped in plastic. I wish they were just tied together with some biodegradable twine or in a paper bag. My goal with these was less plastic waste so the packaging negates that a little.

These work well and last pretty well too. I like how you can put them in the dishwasher to clean and sanitize them. I have bought a few times now.

Very happy with the quality of the sponge, washed with out wearing down my pans. However, do wish the end of life was more eco-friendly.

My partner refuses to use dish brushes and this is the closest sponge I’ve found to your typical plastic one. No complaints from him and seems to get the job done!
But what’s with the plastic packaging? Can it not be stored in cardboard? But I do like that they work with Plastic Bank

I like the fact that they are not made from new plastics, but I do wish that it had no plastic, so that it could be composted later and that the abrasive side was more abrasive.

These work just as well as your average sponge, but I have decided to try out other options, as I wish these had a more sustainable end-of-life. Since they contain recycled plastic, they cannot be composted.

These work great, decided not to repurchase because I feel there are better products out there with better end of life options.

This products work just as well as any other traditional sponge! The rough side removes any build-up on dishes easily. My only wish is that it didn’t come in plastic packaging (but I know even recycled plastic needs a use). Perhaps something like “plastic” made from potatoes or even a paper envelope would be good options.

The two sponges come wrapped in plastic but the sponges are natural. So you give and you take but they last and work exactly like your average scrubber sponge from the grocery store! I’ve also found this exact brand at Kroger but it’s more expensive there. Good product! Hope they change the packaging!

This is a great product, I just wish it came in home-compostable packaging. I’m also wondering what the end of life situation is for this product. Is it compostable itself? A step in the right direction, I’d just like to see some more sustainability information/features

These sponges are the perfect solution for dishwashing. I really wanted to just use loofahs or dish clothes but really missed the texture of a sponge. These have awesome packaging and work just like a regular sponge you’re used to using.

I got these sponges because my partner was not keen to switch away from a standard sponge for cleaning. this was our compromise. they are a good medium ground sponge, not too harsh. But they are better when paired with a pot scrapper. I do wish they were compostable and didn’t come in plastic wrap.

Works better than store bought sponges I think and I feel better using these than the plastic ones. When one is spent I move it to my bathroom and scrub my showers with it then toss it out. Really love these!

Hi Brittney, these sponges are not compostable at the end of their life. For a fully compostable option, we love these natural loofah sponges!

Is this sponge safe for nonstick pans?

Hi! We have been informed from Full Circle that all of their Sponges are safe for nonstick pans :D! We recommend the softer side of the sponge for a longer life for the pan!

Great alternative for the standard sponge. They fall apart after a while, but you’re suppose to replace sponges frequently anyway. Use for light cleaning, not heavy duty stuff. Get a wooden pot scrubber/brush for heavy cleaning.
Comes in plastic packaging, which is disappointing.

These sponges hold up well for everyday dishwashing and will now be my go-to sponges for cleaning. Like other reviewers mentioned, I was also bummed they are wrapped in plastic, but I have a TerraCycle single-stream box that I tossed the plastic wrapper in. I also like that these sponges are white on one side, so it’s easy to see if they’re dirty/stained from sauces or other concentrated foods.

This is a great alternative to the commercial sponges that end up in landfills by the thousands each week. The appearance even appears earth friendly. I ended up using as a gift basket ‘filler’ for my boss, because I decided to go for the natural cleaning brush on this website seeing I will get multiple use out of those. Otherwise this is a good product.

I don’t use my sponges for everyday dishwashing (I have a net kind of cleaning cloth that I use as my regular dish cleaner) and so my sponges are more for cleaning counters, the stove and that type of thing. It’s been great for that. I think the scrubby part might be a little delicate like many cellulose sponges but I think it’s worth it, especially since these seem to have a smaller disposal footprint and for my purposes, light use, they work great!

I really like these sponges, they are comfortable in shape, soft on one side and have a really nice scrub on the other. I was worried about them wearing down quickly, however so far they held up really nicely. If they continue to hold up so well, I will definetely repurchase as there is no need for the usual sponges with plastic.

Do the walnut scrubber sponges come in plastic packaging?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
Mady –
Can these be composted?
(0) (0)
EarthHero –
Hi Mandy — these scrubbers are made with walnut shells and recycled plastic, therefor they are not able to be composted. Thanks for asking!

EarthHero –
Hi Sara,
Those sponges do come in plastic packaging, but we are actively seeking out other options that will use biodegradable or other packaging options! For now, you might be interested in our other cleaning products, such as this dish brush or this small brush that comes in a ceramic soap dish. Great question!
