Who is Eden Reforestation Projects?
As you may know, deforestation has become a global problem, caused by a variety of factors including large-scale slash-and-burn practices, unsustainable agriculture, and more. Regions most impacted by deforestation are often undeveloped areas – and communities that live in these areas often have few options to support their families. Because of this they’re often forced to further destroy their forest environments to survive, cutting down trees for construction, fuel, heat, and agriculture. This further contributes to deforestation in the area, creating long-term impacts like erosion, desertification, and severe flooding.
To help solve this problem, Eden Reforestation Projects utilizes an “Employ to Plant” methodology that benefits the communities in which they plant trees, while simultaneously reforesting land.
Reforestation must benefit the local population, or else it cannot be successful in the long term. The “Employ to Plant” concept gives members of these communities steady employment, providing them with stable access to food, shelter, medicine, and clothing for their families. This decreases extreme poverty, allowing the local economies to grow and the region as a whole to flourish – economically, socially, and environmentally.
The process is simple: to start, Eden Reforestation Projects national leaders partner with villages that are dedicated to forest restoration. Then they hire and train local villagers to plant new trees – specifically native species of trees that are likely to succeed in the region. The villages are then tasked with protecting these forests. This methodology is definitely working: Eden Reforestation Projects report having a ~80% survival rate for their seedlings!
To date, Eden Reforestation Projects has planted 423,873,052 trees at 174 project sites across 8 countries, creating 4,238,730 workdays for their teams. Regions with planting sites in Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia, Mozambique, Kenya, and Central America have all seen positive impacts from these forests, both environmentally and socially. Eden Reforestation Projects’ goal is to plant one trillion trees – and in doing so, give employment to tens of thousands of people living in poverty.
Although they’ve only been around for roughly 15 years, Eden Projects has quickly become the largest tree-planting organization globally. They have done this through their holistic approach – addressing poverty, providing stable employment, and empowering local communities to become agents of environmental reforestation.
EarthHero & Eden Reforestation Projects
The mission of Eden Reforestation Projects is an inspiring one, and we want to bring their impact to the EarthHero community this holiday season. The holidays can be pretty wasteful – from gift product packaging, to food waste, to travel emissions. EarthHero provides a place to do your holiday shopping sustainably – and on top of that, we want to make every order tell a story about giving back. We’ve teamed up with Eden Reforestation Projects to have every order placed on the site from 11/25 to 12/15 plant 5 trees. With your support, we can plant a whole forest of trees – and aid the communities that support these forests!
To have your order plant 5 trees, just use one of the holiday coupon codes on the site – and we’ll do the rest. Thanks for your support, and have a happy (and green!) holiday season.
