For Adventurers, By Adventurers

Who They Are

From scuba diving, to kayaking, swimming, camping, skiing, and hiking, Stream2Sea was built by a hard-working team of both cosmetic chemists, environmentalists, and explorers, led by Autumn Blum, an award winning chemist and an avid diver. When she took a look at the ingredients commonly used in our skin care routines, and their negative effects not only on our bodies, but on the planet as well, she realized that we could all do better–and set out to create eco-conscious skin care products and sunscreens made with the planet in mind.

Through their research and testing they found that certain ingredients in sunscreens are toxic to aquatic ecosystems, accelerating the process of coral bleaching and harming the biodiversity of reef fish species. Those who spend the most time in the ocean; swimmers, divers, snorkelers, fishermen, and other “aquaholics”, were unknowingly wearing toxic sunscreens, with between 6,000 and 14,000 tons of sunscreen chemicals washing into our coral reefs every year. Stream2Sea knew to aid in this problem they needed to create a product without oxybenzones and parabens, two of the most harmful yet common ingredients in conventional sunscreens.

Stream2Sea developed their biodegradable, vegan, and mineral-based formulas by consciously choosing each and every ingredient based off of its efficacy, integrity, and non-harming attributes. They believe that you shouldn’t have to be a chemist or an environmentalist to know what ingredients are in your products or on your skin–and how those ingredients impact our oceans. They’ve dedicated themselves to total transparency in each step of their production, so that you not only understand what you’re using, but can help others understand as well why it’s important to make the switch.

Why We Like Them

Stream2Sea believes it’s time to make a change; if we want to play in our water, we must be responsible for what we bring into it. That’s why, before launching any of their products, Stream2Sea tested their formulas on both purposely bred live freshwater and saltwater fish, as well as scientifically obtained coral larvae, to ensure they are truly safe under any conditions. Whenever possible, they safely test their products on friends and coworkers. While EarthHero looks for companies and brands that are cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified, when it comes to the health of our reefs, we stand with their decision that animal testing is sometimes necessary to ensure only the safest products make it to the market. Hear more from founder Autumn Blum regarding their decision to perform testing here (trust us, it’s a great read!)

Stream2Sea creates high performance products made from only the most carefully chosen ingredients. That means no oxybenzones, and a biodegradable mineral based formula that actually reflects the sun’s harmful rays, instead of absorbing them like traditional sunscreens do. This titanium dioxide-based sunscreen is enriched with antioxidants green tea, olive leaf, tulsi, and wakame to keep skin hydrated even in harsh sunny weather. Not only are their formulas cutting edge, but they package their sunscreens in tubes made from sugarcane resins or recycled plastic to reduce the amount of plastic that impacts our planet.

Dedicated to keeping it local, they manufacture everything in the same town they’re based out of, Wauchula, FL. By bringing business and jobs to their community, Stream2Sea is dedicated to making a difference locally to create impact globally. Their passion is evident: They’re a member of 1% for the Planet, and are members of organizations like the Naui Green Diver Initiative, the American Sport fishing Association, Sea Turtle Preservation Society, just to name a few! Plus, they never stop working to educate their community of explorers, encouraging knowledge sharing between eco-conscious individuals everywhere. When you switch to Stream2Sea, you are supporting a more harmonious relationship between our oceans, and the people who love them.

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Organic materials and ingredients are grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, farm workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship. Choosing organic materials eliminates the use of insecticides and other harmful chemicals, promotes efficient resource use, and results in a safer products and a cleaner planet!

This company partners with 1% for the Planet, a nonprofit organization that helps promote environmental stewardship. Members commit to donating at least 1% of their sales to the program, which helps connect them to high-impact environmental nonprofits across the globe.

This product was made in the United States. Buying locally made items helps to reduce harmful emissions that result from transportation during and after the production process. Purchasing products made in the United States also ensures that the items are produced in ways that meet strict safety and labor standards.

Plant Based Resins are used as an alternative to fully-synthetic plastics. Instead of using Petroleum as the main base ingredient to form plastic, some companies have started replacing a portion of the ingredients with plant and vegetable extracts. This lowers the amount of resources extracted to create purely synthetic products, and often provides a use for agricultural byproducts such as corn or flax. Some plant based resins are made from 100% plant materials, and can be composted in industrial facilities. EarthHero recommends checking with your local compost facility to determine which items are safe to compost.
