Organic Cotton

Organic cotton production uses zero chemical pesticides and fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship. Plus, farming methods for organic cotton have been shown to use up to 20% less water than nonorganic production methods. Choosing organic cotton eliminates the use of insecticides and other harmful chemicals, promotes efficient resource use, and results in a safer products and a cleaner planet!

Recycled PET Fabric

Recycled PET utilizes salvaged post-industrial PET scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers. These plastics are dried, crushed, and spun into yarn in order to create recycled PET fabric, or polyester. By providing a use for recycled plastics, companies encourage recycling programs worldwide, while adding new value to discarded items. Currently, over half of virgin PET production goes towards making textiles, so by utilizing recycled PET, post-consumer materials are both diverting waste while taking the place of raw materials. This helps to reduce the demand for the extraction of oil, as well as energy used to produce new synthetic fibers.

Hemp

This high-yield crop grows quickly and usually doesn’t rely on harsh pesticides and fertilizers, making it a dependable renewable resource. The cannabis plant produces more fiber per acre than common textile crops like cotton and flax, and actually adds nutrients to the soil instead of depleting them! Hemp is strong, breathable, and moisture wicking, and it requires minimal dye during fabric production due to its high absorbency qualities.

I love how these have the tare weight on them, and how easy it is to carry these with you while shopping. It is also great that it comes with different types of bags to help covers all of my needs.

I love not having to use plastic bags for my fresh produce. At first, I was looking for an alternative to the plastic container, then not sure about the plastic bags. Love my ChicoBags. I even purchased a second set in the cute Apple. Love them.

5 out of 5 Going Strong

    Erin McNeely

I have had this pack of bags from Chico for 7 years now and it is still going strong. The bags wash really well- I usually hang them to dry and I think this has helped their longevity. They also have tare marks on them which is convenient when buying something like expensive herbs or mushrooms. I have to admit, I still store my produce in the fridge in plastic bags, though these work too if you are on top of your fridge and don’t leave produce in your drawer for a week or longer like I do….

    Question

    Nancy

So these bags are strictly for the grocery store, not to store in? Or CAN we store in them, too, between shopping trips? (by which I mean, will the produce keep ok in them?)

Hey Nancy, great question! These bags are great to store your food in, as well! In fact, the mesh bag is designed to allow optimal airflow and and humidity (perfect for your veggies in the fridge!), while the natural bags are better to keep nuts and other dry goods moisture-free.

How do you store your produce then in the fridge to keep them fresh?

      Hey Karolyn,

Great question! I’ve asked around our office, and we generally don’t believe that plastic bags help our produce stay fresh. We usually put fresh produce in the crisper drawers in the fridge, unwrapped. Then, we’ll wrap Bee’s Wrap beeswax wraps around any cut vegetables to keep them fresh. Some produce, like asparagus or cilantro, does really well when kept unwrapped in a cup of water in the fridgeā€“similar to flowers in a vase.

We’re planning to write a more in-depth blog about our favorite zero waste food storage solutions, stay tuned!
