Why choose organic tampons? Well, because most tampons are made from a blend of rayon, pesticide-grown cotton, and are usually chlorine-bleached. Natracare believes that women should not be exposed to azo-dyes, dioxins, phthalates, and plastics–which is why they created their line of chemical-free tampons back in 1989. Their Organic Tampons without Applicator are 100% organic cotton (and nothing else!), and expand widthways for easy usage and removal. Plus, they're biodegradable and compostable at the end of their life!
Compostable
This product contains material that can break down into soil in either a backyard or industrial composting system. These products are declared compostable by the manufacturer, but may not third-party certified. Contact your local waste-hauler or composting facility to determine where these materials may be accepted. Certain materials may be better fit for industrial facilities than backyard composting systems. Industrial facilities may not exist in your area.

Low Impact Dyes or Inks
Low impact dyes and inks can include vegetable, soy, or water-based alternatives and generally do not contain toxins such as heavy metals, plasticizers, flurocarbons, and fomaldehyde. They typically also use less water than conventional dyes and inks.

Organic Content
Organic materials and ingredients are grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, farm workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship. Choosing organic materials eliminates the use of insecticides and other harmful chemicals, promotes efficient resource use, and results in a safer products and a cleaner planet!

Phthalate Free
Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Natracare

Natracare began in 1989 when founder Susie Hewson got upset after watching a documentary about the growing danger to human health and the environment from dioxin pollution (which results from pulping industries and the bleaching of paper products). Knowing that there was an unconcerned response from the international period hygiene brands, Susie was determined to come up with an alternative. Natracare became the world's first alternative to conventionally produced menstrual products and today is the global leading brand of natural and organic menstrual and personal care products. All of Natracare's products are made from organic and natural materials, and the company as a whole is committed to the highest ethical standards. All of their products are animal-friendly, vegetarian-approved, gynecologist recommended, sustainably sourced, multi-award winning, certified organic, and totally chlorine-free. Plus, all of their products are biodegradable so make you're minimizing your impact and not leaving pesky plastics behind.

Great non-applicator tampon for someone looking to reduce waste

I love these! I've been trying to reduce my waste when it comes to my period for a while now, but since giving birth to my child, I have light incontinence and rectocele, so I haven't been able to successfully use a menstrual cup. Tampons with applicators, although sometimes easier to insert, have a lot of plastic waste (and the cardboard ones just aren't comfortable me for me). I've tried a few different non-applicator tampons, and these work just as well as any brand available in the grocery store or in an online speciality shop for menstrual products. As long as I continue to have to use tampons, I'll stick with these. The only thing that would make them better is if they weren't individually wrapped in plastic. I know they have to be wrapped for sanitary reasons, but I would love to see them wrapped in paper, like some toilet paper companies now do.
