The average school in America will use close to 250,000 pieces of paper each year, with almost 4 billion trees cut down annually across the globe to support this industry. Onyx and Green is breaking this cycle of waste, not only with their unique paper products made from low-impact sugarcane and upcycled construction waste, but with an entire line of school and office supplies. From backpacks, to pens, to even rubber bands and calculators, they infuse creativity and sustainability into the designs of all their products. With consistency in their values and transparency in their production, materials, and values, Onyx and Green is helping to find new solutions in the office supply industry.

These pens are basically just plastic pens wrapped in a bamboo shell. They are not greener or more sustainable, quite the contrary. In addition to being a plastic pen they waste bamboo material on making it look good. Don’t buy this. It is also not a very good pen in general.

Thank you for sharing your feedback Julian! We are sorry to hear these pens didn’t live up to your expectations. While there is in fact plastic in these pens, what is particularly fascinating is that it is a bio-based plastic made from corn, far better than their typical petroleum-based counterpart.

great pens! happy to purchase because of the material – but sad that they ran out of ink and are not refillable. Good alternative to plastic pens, though.

Question
Dylan –
How should I dispose of these when finished? Are they compostsble?

EarthHero –
Hi Dylan! Great question. The body of this pen is bamboo and can be crushed and composted when the pen is finished. Even thought the tip is made from corn-based plastic, it is not fully compostable and will need to be placed in the trash. For an even more eco-option, check out this refillable pen made from natural meadow grass and with BPA-free plastic!
