Stop microfiber pollution at the source with the Guppyfriend Microwaste Washing Bag! According to a study from UCSB, a city the size of Berlin releases a wash-related volume of microfibers equivalent to 500,000 plastic bags... every single day. These plastic fibers from synthetic textiles are consumed by sea life, where they cause countless health problems that ultimately work their way up the food chain. The solution? Stop microfibers while you wash AND protect your clothes from shedding. The GRead More

This does practically exactly what it says! The only thing I wish could improve is showing more details and information on WHAT to do with the micro-waste I accumulate for it to be disposed of properly. The other bonus that’s nice is if you do install a better microfiber filter on your washing machine, you can just use this as a linen bag for delicates!

It’s fine for a garment bag for delicates etc but I couldn’t find anything to collect after using it for several loads. It limits the number of items I CAN wash at one time

Hi Joan, we’re sorry to hear you aren’t loving the Guppyfriend bag as much as you had hoped. While it certainly can function as a delicates bag, its intended purpose is for washing clothing with synthetic fibers to stop microplastics from running into our waterways! Depending on the type of clothing you are washing, it can take weeks of washing in the bag to produce enough fibers to be removed (because of how micro they are)!

The bags isn’t big enough for large loads so you have to do more loads if you want to use the bag often. Also because all the clothes are within the bag I feel as if they don’t get as clean because the clothes aren’t free to be directly agitated in the water but still works for regular loads. I’m not sure how it would clean if clothes were heavily soiled. All in all it’s meant for delicates and small loads.

I’ve used this for numerous washes now, and it’s useful as a delicate bag. I have a hard time collecting fibers to dispose, so I’m just leaving them in the bag for now until there’s a bigger amount to grab. I have noticed some lint fuzz seems to collect on the outside; I’m hoping it’s just lint and not microfibers that are escaping the bag somehow. The biggest downside is that when the bag is 3/4 full, it’s bulky and heavy, which throws my top-door washing machine off balance. Sometimes I don’t have enough natural fiber laundry to counterbalance the Guppy bag. For that reason, I’d choose the ball catcher for convenience if I could start over.

I hate the flimsy feel of normal delicate washing bags, but this does the trick!

Purchased this specifically for pre-washing fabrics that tend to unravel in the wash before they’re sewn. This bag does a perfect job of keeping the unraveled bits in the bag and also protects the fabrics from other items in the wash. I’ve started using this as a lingerie bag for delicates, too. To give you an idea of the size of this bag, I put 4 yards of fabric in it without a problem.

Lint doesn’t always end up in the “right” spot but I do see it and I’m glad the guppyfriend is catching it.

Question
Dale Morris –
I am wondering if the manufacturer of this product would ever make a filter out of the same material to fit over the drain hose from the washing machine? I sometimes take my Guppy Friend Washing bag and put it over the drain hose with a zip tie. Seems to have the same result, after all, water has to be filtered through it, but I wish there were a filter specifically designed for this.

Hi Dale! Thanks for sharing this eco-tip- love it! The Guppyfriend Microwaste Washing Bag is great for filtering microplastics as well as other fibers. I will pass this recommendation along to the manufacturer as well as our Product Team to see if we can find anything like this!

Question
Cynthia B Robson –
I use cleancult laundry tablets.
Are these likely to get stuck?
What are the comparative advantages between the coraball and the guppy bags?
Do I need both?

EarthHero –
Hi Cynthia! The Guppyfriend recommends using a liquid detergent with this bag. To use the Guppyfriend, you can place all of your synthetic-fiber clothes (polyester, spandex, etc.) into the bag so that the fibers can be caught! After washing, you can collect the fibers inside and discard them. With a Cora Ball, you toss the ball into your load of mixed fiber clothing (some cotton, some polyester) to catch the fibers. It can take a few loads of use for microfibers to catch in the ball, but once they are visible, you can pinch them out and discard them as well. We recommend using only one or the other! If we can help with your decision, feel free to reach out at support@earthhero.com. We are here to help 😀

Nic –
Can I use the organic soap nuts with the bag?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Nic! We recommend using a liquid detergent with the Guppyfriend like this for best results. Powdered detergents can get stuck in the bag’s tight weave, but you’re welcome to use soap nuts in their liquid form!

As a renter, I am not ready to fuss with a formal microplastics. I bought two guppy bags and a coraball. I strongly recommend the guppy bags over the cora ball. These are huge, sturdy, and I have had no trouble getting my clothes clean. I recommend buying two and splitting your load between them to keep your washer balanced. Very satisfying to put a brand new item of clothing in the bag and pull out chunks of lint from the bag that could’ve been washed into our public water. These have hanging loops and if you put up some hooks you can easily use a few of these as an alternative to a traditional hamper as well.

I’ve had my eye on this for a while and decided since Earth Day was coming up, I might as well jump the gun and buy it (cause I was going to regardless).
OH. MY. GAWD! This sucker is HUGE! It literally held almost all of my synthetics (I wear mostly workout clothes, so I wear a lot of them). I didn’t catch as much as I thought I would, and I also realized they aren’t always at the top corners of the bag.
At the end of the load after getting the clothes out, I actually just inverted this over the trash can and got everything out.
I used this for my gym clothes, my intimates, and the clothes I never want to have to replace to help reduce fiber tearing and extend the life of my clothes. You do need to be a bit careful you don’t overfill the bag, but this is soooo freaking amazing! I love it! I wish they sold the GuppyFriend filter for your actual washer….

Question
Mary K –
Do you have anything that can catch the micro plastics as they leave the washing machine instead of using the bag in the machine?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Mary, thanks for reaching out! Our product team is on the hunt for the best filter that attaches to the washing machine. However, this bag, as well as the Cora Ball, are wonderful because, in addition to catching microfibers, they also reduce clothing from shedding in the first place! Another tip is to always wash on cold to further discourage microplastics and fibers from coming off of clothing.

As other reviews mention, it’s quite large. Immediately from the first wash, I saw the fibers collecting in the bag. Clothes come out looking as clean as they had before without the bag.

basically_a_plant (verified owner) –
This bag was actually a lot larger than I expected and can fit most, if not all, of my synthetics! Then I just put my cotton garments in the same load outside of the bag- it works perfectly! NOTE: Doesn’t seem to work well with my washing machine when I do a load with just the bag. You need other textiles thrown in for it to run properly. Otherwise it’s just banging around in there and throws all the weight off :/
Can’t wait to start seeing results!

I thought this bag was going to be much smaller than it is. It holds quite a bit! The first time I used it I was shocked at how much lint was left inside! I had no idea how much material was getting washed down the drain!

I wasn’t sure how much I’d be able to fit in the bag, but it’s been more than big enough to fit all that I need in it! I’ve been using it every week for over a month and I can see some fibers building up. I’m glad that it really works and that I’m able to wash my clothes without them shedding microplastics!

This is a great product. I was avoiding washing my fleece vest because of the microfibers getting in the water. It works great, and I’m so happy to have a clean vest!

I purchased a different microwaste washing bag brand and Guppyfriend out performed with its high quality! Its very easy to use and remove fibers that collect in the corners. Its a simple way to reduce the microplastic waste that my synthetic clothes create during the wash.

I love this! I’ve been putting any polyester clothing in the bag and leaving cotton clothing out, and I can see a small patch of fibers getting caught in the corner near the zipper after only two washes! I’m really happy that this is something I can do to reduce the amount of plastic in the waterways until I have my own place where I can put a filter on the washing machine.

Question
Maddy –
Can this bag be used with laundry detergent pods, such as dropps? It say in their faq to use liquid over powder, but I’m not sure where pods fall because of their membrane?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Maddy! Detergent pods should work just fine with the Guppyfriend Washing Bag. The membrane enclosing Dropps detergent dissolves rapidly once submerged in water and what’s left is a standard, highly-concentrated liquid. The dilemma with powder and the washing bag has to do with the powder not fully dissolving and getting stuck in the bag’s tight weave. Thank you for asking!

Question
S –
Is this bag made of naturally occurring polyamide or synthetic polyamide? If it’s synthetic does the bag itself shed microplastic?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi there! The Guppyfriend is made of a synthetic polyamide. However- it is made out of monofilaments, which are more like sticks than threads, and thus the bag does not release fibers itself! 🙂

Question
L –
Could I put any type of textile (not just synthetics) in the bag in order to protect all my clothing?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hello! Yes! The Guppyfriend Washing Bag will collect microplastic and microfibers but also protect clothing from friction while in the washing machine. The bag inhibits shedding of all fibers, synthetic or not, and is an excellent way to help extend the life of clothing. 🙂

Question
Madelyn –
This says “remove microfibers and dispose properly”. This might be a dumb question, but how do I dispose of them properly?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi! This is a very important question. Currently, there is no solution for repurposing tiny microplastics and fibers. Therefore, once removed from the Guppyfriend Washing Bag, they will need to be disposed of in the garbage. While not a perfect solution, consolidating the waste helps ensure that they do not end up in our waterways where they may cause harm to aquatic life and surrounding ecosystems. Thanks for asking!
