Did you know that when organic waste is left in plastic inside the landfill, it’s unable to decompose properly and generates methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide? Even worse, hundreds of years later, when the plastic-bag around your organic waste does break down, it leaves behind tons of nasty microplastics, further polluting our waterways and ecosystems. Make the switch from trashy plastic bags to a compostable alternative with BioBag!
Made from GMO-Free crops, each BioBag product helps you reduce your use of single use, disposable plastics. From pet waste bags, to food storage solutions, to countertop compost bags, BioBag has a (compostable) solution.

Question
Jennifer L DOW –
Does this material still biodegrade in regular landfill/trash pick ups? Our small city does not have a municipal composting facility.

Hi Jennifer! Great question! Most landfills are oxygen-poor, which means that any present microorganisms will engage in anaerobic-respiration as they break down any organic material. This is a very slow process, but yes, these bags will eventually break down. If you use these bags for your own compost, they’ll easily breakdown in a backyard bin, especially with adequate turning and aeration.
It should be noted that while these bags offer a great alternative to plastic and help us move away from fossil-fuel based products, any organic matter in landfills presents a problem (which is why composting is so important!). As those microorganisms engage in anaerobic-respiration, they release methane as a byproduct. We know that methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, so the more food-waste we can divert from landfills the better! Some landfills are employing methane trapping technology and turning it into energy, which is great.
Maybe more info than you needed! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to nerd out. 🙂

Happy with the bags except they fall down inside the trash can, don’t stay gripped around the rim. Maybe need to find a trash can that fits them better.

Hi Michelle! These are wider bags and great for a big trashcan. You may want to try tieing a knot on the side to keep it tight around the can’s rim. 🙂

I am glad that finally switched to a degradable bag so that my trash does not last forever in the ground

I love having the option to use compostable garbage bags for my kitchen garbage. I can throw messy things away and know that the bag will keep it contained but then will break down eventually.
