BPI Certified Compostable
This product contains material that has been third-party certified to meet ASTM Standards D6400 (for Compostable Plastics) or ASTM D6868 (for Compostable Packaging). These products break down in industrial composting facilities, and turn into usable soil. Appropriate facilities may not exist in your area.
Compostable
This product contains material that can break down into soil in either a backyard or industrial composting system. These products are declared compostable by the manufacturer, but may not third-party certified. Contact your local waste-hauler or composting facility to determine where these materials may be accepted. Certain materials may be better fit for industrial facilities than backyard composting systems. Industrial facilities may not exist in your area.
Sustainable Lifestyle
This product helps promote a more sustainable lifestyle. Whether it encourages re-use and the movement away from disposable products, or it promotes sustainable actions like recycling and composting, this product can help you lower your environmental footprint.
No GMO
This product is made without the use of Genetically Modified Organisms. The process of using GMO’s involves manipulating the DNA of plants, animals, and other organisms to produce benefits such as an ability to tolerate herbicides or produce their own pesticides. GMO’s have been deemed as unsafe by many developed nations.
Plant Based Resin
Plant Based Resins are used as an alternative to fully-synthetic plastics. Instead of using Petroleum as the main base ingredient to form plastic, some companies have started replacing a portion of the ingredients with plant and vegetable extracts. This lowers the amount of resources extracted to create purely synthetic products, and often provides a use for agricultural byproducts such as corn or flax. Some plant based resins are made from 100% plant materials, and can be composted in industrial facilities. EarthHero recommends checking with your local compost facility to determine which items are safe to compost.
Ditch the plastic trash bags! Did you know that normal trash bags take 500 years to break down in landfills? This bulk pack of 13-gallon kitchen bags are compostable and help you reduce your household's dependency on plastic. These bags are also great if you have a large compost bin or own a business that disposes of compostable items in large quantities.

I’m not a big fan of the plastic bags so these are a great alternative. As long as they aren’t loaded too much and there isn’t too much moisture, they seem to last. The only issue I have is that any moisture can cause a small odor from the bags. It isn’t that noticeable unless up close and it’s not enough to keep me from using them. Other than that, they are great!

I’ve been using these bags for over a year. They’re a great idea, and I appreciate what they’re attempting to do. However, I’ve had multiple bags break on me. It seems they are so thin, they can easily be punctured or tear with the slightest effort. If there is anything with moisture, it immediately starts to dissolve the bag, creating a hole. I would like to see the company review their product and possibly at least double the thickness. That may make all the difference.
I’ve had to look elsewhere for dependable trash bags that will last at least the week without dissolving or breaking. There are many other products on the market that are more reliable.

Agree with other comment that you can’t overfill them or act too rough with them. But they work very well for cans that are regularly emptied, such as my church’s kitchen. I have been using these for years. Unfortunately, I was buying them from J. Be*os. I bought a supply for my church, hoping to wean them off of the dreadful indestructible woven plastic scented bags they’ve been using. It worked, they have happily been using that supply and are willing to purchase more in the future, so long as I could find another source. That’s what brought me to Earth Hero. I bought some more and will urge them to make regular purchases of these bags and other earth saving products from Earth Hero. Glad to get them off the Glad bags, so we can be consistent with our principles of sustainability and stewardship.

I originally bought the smaller pack to test the product out, and I loved them. So, buying in bulk was the logical next step. They work exceptionally well for both my landfill and recycle bins, although you do need to be careful with filling them up with heavy items, since they will tear upon too much stretching. Will never go back to plastic bags after these!

Even though they won’t properly degrade in a landfill, I can feel at ease that I’m not purchasing plastic for the sole purpose of sending it to landfill. They don’t have drawstrings like traditional trash bags, so you may need to tie a knot on the side to help them stay up if they’re falling down for you. I have no problem with the size, durability, or how well it stays up in my trash can!

It’s hard to find trash bags that don’t contribute to the plastic problem. These bags will do the trick. They are super thin so I wondered if they were already beginning to decompose in my pail. I have to remember to toss out the garbage more frequently. I have an alternative which are bags made from recycled ocean plastic so I use those when I need it for heavy duty trash.

Question
Kate –
Can these bags be used to hold trash or only compost? I’m new to this!
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Kate! Great question- these bags are compostable, meaning that if you put compost in them and then place the whole bag in a composting pile or industrial composting are, all of it will compost! They can have trash in them, but they will not compost, because a landfill environment is very different than a composting environment. However, we do love them as a wonderful plastic trash bag alternative!

The bags were smaller than I expected, so I had to rig them in my trash can a special way to keep them from sliding down. I love the idea of these bags, but I don’t think they’re the best fit for my trash can.

Question
Steve C –
Ho
w long does it take to degrade in the ocean, to the point mammal arn’t harmed by swallowing?

EarthHero –
Hi Steve! These Bio Bags meet the European home compost standards, which means they will completely degrade in 90 days in a compost pile that maintains a minimum temperature of 113 Fahrenheit! They are not meant to be disposed of in the ocean, only composted.

I was worried these bags will rip and took my trash out by taking the whole bin out. No issues so far, I’m pleased with my purchase!

I have been pleasantly surprised at how well these BioBags perform. Eco bags that I bought in the past were too flimsy. But these bags work very well and I will continue to buy them. It saves me adding 30 plastic bags a month, 360 bags a year, to our Earth.

The bin liner is sealed at the bottom and is not wide enough to fit over the top of a 13 gallon bin without tearing, making it useless.

Question
Jane –
are these drawstring bags?

EarthHero –
Hi, Jane! Great question- these bio bags are not drawstring, they are open at the top! You can tie them up by the corners to ensure that your items do not fall out during transport, though 🙂

We were very impressed with the quality and strength of this compostible bag for the kitchen. The bags do not take up much storage space and are a much better choice than plastic bags.

We have used these for a years now. We understand the issues with how the bags and other organic materials degrade in landfills (e.g. taking longer than composting, releasing methane, etc.) but with forever plastic being the alternative, we see using these bags for all manner of household waste as a no-brainer.

Question
Jennifer L DOW –
Does this material still biodegrade in regular landfill/trash pick ups? Our small city does not have a municipal composting facility.

EarthHero –
Hi Jennifer! Great question! Most landfills are oxygen-poor, which means that any present microorganisms will engage in anaerobic-respiration as they break down any organic material. This is a very slow process, but yes, these bags will eventually break down. If you use these bags for your own compost, they’ll easily breakdown in a backyard bin, especially with adequate turning and aeration.
It should be noted that while these bags offer a great alternative to plastic and help us move away from fossil-fuel based products, any organic matter in landfills presents a problem (which is why composting is so important!). As those microorganisms engage in anaerobic-respiration, they release methane as a byproduct. We know that methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases, so the more food-waste we can divert from landfills the better! Some landfills are employing methane trapping technology and turning it into energy, which is great.
Maybe more info than you needed! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to nerd out. 🙂

Happy with the bags except they fall down inside the trash can, don’t stay gripped around the rim. Maybe need to find a trash can that fits them better.

Hi Michelle! These are wider bags and great for a big trashcan. You may want to try tieing a knot on the side to keep it tight around the can’s rim. 🙂

I love having the option to use compostable garbage bags for my kitchen garbage. I can throw messy things away and know that the bag will keep it contained but then will break down eventually.
