Tierra and Lava

After leaving her childhood home of Belize to study eco-tourism abroad, Tierra & Lava founder, Lucy Ashman, an environmentalist at heart, felt a call to return to the bright and vibrant land of Central America. Lucy felt a conviction to enrich the place she called home in a way that was sustainable, ethical, and in reverence to the culture and ancient Mayan wisdom that echoes across the region.

After settling in Antigua, Guatemala, Lucy began an organic mountainside garden with a vista overlooking the land of which she felt so connected. Sourcing from her garden, Lucy began pairing natural, whole ingredients with centuries-old Mayan wisdom to create modern and holistic skincare products. These quickly became beloved by others in the area and soon she was making luxurious soaps and scrubs for boutique hotels. When she isn't able to grow her own ingredients, Lucy leverages her education in eco-tourism to develop relationships with local farmers and producers who continue to carry on the legacy of disappearing cultural practices.

Conscious Skincare with Mayan Wisdom

Tierra & Lava's dedication to sustainability doesn't end with the sourcing of its ingredients. Their daily operations feature impressive zero-waste practices and even their website's server is solar-powered! Plus, each thoughtfully crafted product is packaged primarily with reusable and recyclable glass, aluminum, paper, and cardboard. Gift bundles are wrapped in hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-woven cotton pouches produced by a women's cooperative in nearby Lake Atitlan. Tierra & Lava's commitment to minimizing their impact goes further than just their products as well. Any non-recyclable plastic products are repurposed on-site into eco-bricks to create a zero-waste border for their garden. They also conserve water through a composting bathroom and all of their greywaters are processed through a natural stone and gravel filtration process before being used on the land wow! Tierra & Lava is a rare and wonderful trifecta: dedicated to sustainability, ethical practices, and, of course, incredible products made with love and care. Each product pays homage to the area's Mayan roots while offering a rare convergence of high-end skincare and zero-waste beauty.
