ettitude

While shopping for her new home, ettitude Founder Phoebe Yu was disappointed by the lack of sustainable fabrics she was coming across. No matter where she looked, she struggled to find anything that met her sustainable values, let alone fabrics that were also soft and affordable. Realizing there was a gap in the market, Phoebe set to work with fellow ettitude co-founder Kat Dey. Together, using their entrepreneurial know-how, passion for sustainability, and years of experience working with textiles, they launched ettitude's CleanBamboo‚ in 2014.

Bamboo is a bit of a sustainability superhero. Not only does it grow incredibly quickly, requires minimal water to thrive, and absorbs more carbon per acre than traditional hardwood forests, but it can also be used to craft everything from cooking utensils, alternative construction materials, and incredibly soft, durable fabrics. However, ettitude's CleanBamboo‚Ñ¢ goes even further than that. Made from 100% organic bamboo, ettitude also crafts CleanBamboo‚Ñ¢ in a non-toxic and closed-loop system, recollecting up to 98% of the water used in processing. Compared to generic cotton, ettitude's fabric uses 500x less water, and produces 52% fewer carbon emissions!

Comfort Meets Sustainability

There's no other way to say it: ettitude's CleanBamboo, is a total game-changer in the sustainable fabrics world. Not only is it a soft, durable fabric with a clean and impressive production process, but it does all that without compromising on the environment. At its start, ettitude's bamboo is not only 100% EcoCert organic but is exclusively sourced from FSC Certified forests, meaning the bamboo was grown and harvested using sustainable practices that provide environmental, economic, and social benefits. Then, the bamboo is taken to a local facility, where it is crushed into a pulp, dissolved to release fibers using a non-toxic solvent, and then woven into yarn. By carefully measuring and tending to the manufacturing process, ettitude can ensure a near-perfect closed-loop system, recollecting around 98% of the water used! Plus, in 2020, ettitude launched Loop, a textile recycling pilot program, to introduce even more sustainability into their materials sourcing. While their products are designed in Melbourne and Los Angeles, their products are all ethically made in China, right where their bamboo is grown. Sourcing and processing in the same country minimize unnecessary carbon emissions that occur during transportation. ettitude's partners are all certified by global third-party auditors like BSCI, WRAP, and SEDEX. Plus, they all work to ettitude's own Supplier Code of Conduct, based on the standards of the International Labor Organization, United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and industry best practices. These standards apply to everyone in ettitude's supply chain, from farm to factory, including subcontractors and sub-suppliers. Of course, ettitude's dedication to sustainable materials goes further than their own products, too. ettitude uses offcuts from their production to create reusable drawstring packaging and has sought out how to eliminate virgin plastic whenever possible. Plastic buttons have been replaced by plant-based tagua nut buttons, while their down alternative is made from exclusively recycled water bottles (GRS 4.0 RPET). To top it all off, ettitude is a fellow 1% for the Planet member, meaning they donate 1% of revenue to non-profits and organizations that help protect and repair our planet. While ettitude has always made efforts to minimize carbon emissions in their supply chain, even offsetting before it was a well-known process, they've now committed to being Carbon Neutral Certified as well as becoming a Certified B Corp by the end of 2021!
