Decomposition

Students, note-takers, list-makers, and stationery devotees will jump for joy for eco-friendly notebooks from Decomposition! Based in Brooklyn, New York, Decomposition has been providing sustainably-made notebook and paper options since 1949. With 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper and soy-based inks, their sketchbooks, pocket diaries, and notebooks are an environment enthusiast's dream come true.

Decomposition founder, Michael Roger, knew he wanted to create a sustainable stationary option for eco-conscious writers like himself. Growing up with a nature preserve at his doorstep, he developed a closeness and love of the environment at an early age that later motivated him to create the perfect eco-notebook. The designs started with a plain cover and recycling symbol, but Michael felt they needed something else. He wanted to bring more to the story, so he adorned the front and back covers with detailed and colorful art prints that were inspired by nature. Starting with Woodgrain and Cherry Blossom, two designs that are still available today, the Decomposition line has evolved to include over 100 different whimsical and fun patterns and prints! With standard and pocket sizes, sewn and spiral-bound notebooks available, the options for writing, scribbling, and doodling are limitless. For the next office or school supply run, look no further than the environmentally-focused notebooks from Decomposition!

Eco-friendly, Recycled Notebooks Made in the USA

In 2018, 17.2 million tons of paper were sent to landfills in the United States. That is approximately 412 million trees that could have been saved through recycling! Decomposition notebooks are made with 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper. Produced entirely from discarded paper that was once put in office or home recycling bins, this process saves trees and provides new life to previously used sheets. This method also eliminates the need to harvest virgin materials and further helps preserve animal habitats and established forests. Moreover, once a notebook is full, all one must do is remove the tape or metal spiral from the binding and recycle the cover and inside paper separately. Since paper is easily and routinely recycled, each notebook can once again take on a new purpose. Recycling has the potential to increase a paper's lifecycle up to seven times! In addition to their sustainably created paper, each intricate cover art is printed with soy-based inks. Made from soybean oil, soy-based ink is a more environmentally friendly option over traditional petroleum-based inks and will degrade up to four times faster at the end of life. Although it may take longer to dry, soy-based inks also emit lower levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which in turn reduces air pollution and minimizes toxic emissions that are harmful to humans. Soy ink is also easier to remove in the de-inking process of recycling paper and therefore makes it more convenient to recycle. Finally, in addition to being non-toxic and leaving no chemical residue, soy inks provide more accurate and vibrant colors as soybean oil is clearer and means fewer pigments must be used. Since 1949, Decomposition has been family-owned and made in the USA. Brands based in the United States help reduce the number of emissions that come from the transportation of materials during and after the manufacturing process. It also means companies have more oversight in how their products are created and how their workers are treated. From their thoughtfully sourced materials to their creative notebook covers, Decomposition is a leader in making sustainable stationery options for every eco-conscious penman!
