Zero Waste Mascara

You are NOT going to get a full volume lashes like from the ads with this product. This mascara gives very subtle effect. I used a random wand I had at home and it worked fine for me. Consistency it is smooth and application is easy. Once again, this is not going to give you a stage make up look. It looks very natural. It didn't clump for me, but i didn't use a lot. I like natural look. It's very light and yes it does smudge, but it's actually pretty easy to wipe. I like it. And please, look up how to apply mascara, because a lot of people are doing it wrong. It may help you with volume. I added pictures of myself so you can see the effect. Eye on the left has no mascara, eye on the right has mascara. You can also use it as eyeliner, if you got it with brush or have a flat tip.

Great layering, not as buildable and smudge proof as a regular water proof mascara, but love it for a light makeup day

The concept is wonderful, however the product is not. The spoolie head is too big to fit the mascara container. The mascara smudges after a little while after application. I won’t be purchasing this again.

It didnt stay on my eyelashes well. It looked cute for about an hour. My eyelids are a little more on the oily side though so that may have played into it.

The only thing good about this mascara is that it’s zero waste. What a mess! It rubs off under and over eye, is hard to apply, would be hard to store if I was keeping it. It’s frustrating that they are offering this low quality product as an alternative.

I like using this mascara and love that it came in eco-friendly packaging with a reusable and eco-friendly brush. The mascara itself is light weight and doesn’t seem to smudge too much. Sometimes it can be a little chunky but that might be user error as I learn to roll it on the brush. I do wonder if it will get too difficult to roll the brush in it once the top layers have been used, since the container is more of a puck than a tube (you can’t “dip” the brush in like other mascaras). But I am willing to keep using it and figure it out when it comes to that. Overall, if you’re looking for sustainable make-up and don’t mind trying something a little unconventional, I’d recommend this product.

I think I can make this mascara work, but it does not go on very thick or make very dark lashes. I am blonde, so my lashes are very light and this mascara will give me enough color for everyday wear. I read other reviews that the mascara comes off and leaves a dark circle around the eyes but that is not my experience - mine is the opposite, that it is hard to get enough on. I do feel great about not having a plastic container with a small amount of product in it. This cardboard container is great and I think it will last a long time. It didn't come with any directions - it might be helpful to know if there's a trick to putting it on to get thicker lashes.

I love that it is biodegradiable

I love the idea of a no-waste mascara but I find it difficult to apply, the clay-like consistency is too hard (unless I'm missing a step? Am I supposed to wet it before applying?) I also wish there was more information with the packaging, like how-to-apply directions and bristle cleaning instructions would be great.

Wish it was easier to apply. I want to love it but it’s not super user friendly. Going to try to add some olive oil to it to make it easier to apply

Hard to use, bad design, smudges

I bought the brush only and LOVE it! It feels like it is amazing material and I feel like an artist using it. It glides my eyebrow pomade on perfectly with no clumps or mess!

I wanted so very badly to like this product. I am trying to switch all household and personal care products over to more sustainable options. I decided to try this mascara. Packaging and shipping materials were great. I tried to apply the mascara by wetting a spooly wand, rubbing it in the mascara and then applying. It would work fairly well, providing light coverage, but in about 10 minutes time, the mascara would start to run from my lashes leaving large black swatches under my eyes. For light coverage on top lashes it may work, but I am disappointed to say it will not work for more buildable overall cover.

Would not buy again. I really wanted to like it but it just didn't work no matter how I tried it

Really wanted this to work but it immediately created raccoon eyes. Smudges & gets all around top & bottom lids just with normal blinking. Doesn’t stay in place. Really love the minimalist & clean ingredients/packaging but doesn’t do the job for me unfortunately. Asked for a refund but haven’t had a response back.

Really love the whole concept, packaging but how in the world do I get any much of this on my lashes? I use the spoolie brush but it's too thick to get much onto my lashes. Can I add something to it to help spread it?

I do love the idea and I was full of expectations about it - even if I don't mascara every day I loved the chance to reduce plastic even on that one, but it just doesn't stay there, and after 10 minutes I look like a panda (nothing wrong with it, but I'd rather cuddle or watch pandas doing random clumsy stuff than look like one of them). I don't sweat much and my skin isn't oily at all. River organics, I trust you folks, solve the panda issue and I'll be back, I promise!

So far, I’m not super impressed with this product. It’s very dry so it flakes when I try to apply and gets in my eyes and on my cheeks. I tried adding a bit of water to my brush when applying to smooth the consistency, which helped a little, but may try coconut oil or something like that to see if that is better. At least it’s not in a plastic tube which is the whole point.

I just got it and was so excited to try it out! I’m so so deeply disappointed in this. The mascara is below the edge of the container so the spoolie you buy with it doesn’t fit, but you can dig into it with the tip? Or you can bend the wand I guess? In what world does that make sense? The mascara was difficult to get to “stick” to my eyelashes and ended up with crumbles(?) of mascara. Maybe use the other side of the spoolie that has a brush and kind of “paint” your eyelashes?? But that’s a mess. It seems maybe that was the intention all along for this brush to make sense with this product? To give an idea of what this looks like once applied, It’s black mascara, but doesn’t leave a noticeable change on my blonde eyelashes. You can’t do multiple coats. I wanted to love this product… but it’s not a zero waste product at all if it going to throw away a brand new mascara and buy something else. I will say the packaging seems easy to compost, but I generally prefer not spending $20 on items that go straight to compost. Maybe that’s just me.

This mascara smudged all over. I kept cleaning it up every time I passed by a mirror. SOooo not worth it! I wanted to love this. I love the packaging! I love the idea! But the formula is a big fail. So sad.

I was really looking forward to this mascara, as I have been slowly transitioning to zero waste products. I was a fan of the ingredients and did not hesitate to buy this. However, I am extremely disappointed with this product. First, the cake of mascara is shorter than the packaging, so it can be difficult to get product on the brush in the first place. Trying to tap the cake out of the package in order to make reaching to product easier was also very difficult. I would not have left such a low review accessibility were the only issue, but the product does little to enhance my lashes. I tried building it up by putting on multiple coats, but that made no difference. The mascara does not dry, which is why putting on multiple coats is difficult. Because it does not dry, it also easily comes off throughout the day. If I even slightly rub underneath my eye (which I am aware is not a good practice), the mascara comes off and gets all over my fingers. Very disappointed in this product and I do not recommend it.
