Simply Straws

Sustainability, One Sip At A Time

Who They Are

After 31 years as a dental hygienist, mother and co-founder of Simply Straws Cyndi Sladics felt compelled to provide a straw that helped with dental problems like teeth sensitivity and staining, while being both safe for her patients and the environment. So in 2012, with a passion to educate their community, the Sladics’ family began Simply Straws, a reusable glass drinking straw alternative to traditional plastic straws.

These reusable, durable, biodegradable, and handmade glass straws are crafted in California with equal portions of logic and love. The materials are BPA-free, hypoallergenic, and the colors are non-toxic, so you can sip without the guilt. They are committed to building a brighter future for everyone by using renewable energy, supporting green local jobs that cannot be outsourced, and fighting pollution and climate change whenever possible.

“Talking this over with my family we all agreed it was time to make a product that I was confident to recommend and know it was the best of the best for my patients. We took my knowledge of science and health, my husband’s love of creating, my son’s youthful energy and my daughters’ passion to protect the environment to provide for you our reusable drinking straws. A solution to a problem that affects all of us.” - Cyndi Sladics

Why We Like Them

Did you know traditional plastics slowly leak harmful chemicals into everything they touch–whether it’s through your single-use water bottle, plastic straw, or even household products? If that wasn’t bad enough, that same plastic doesn’t biodegrade, and instead breaks into thousands of tiny toxic pieces in our landfills. While one individual straw doesn’t create an environmental disaster, it’s the scale that creates an issue–in the United States alone, over 500 million single-use plastic straws are tossed every year. By switching to Simply Straws, you reduce the amount of plastic overall that’s headed to our landfills, thanks to the recyclable and reusable nature of their glass straws.

Simply Straws is committed to maximum sustainability at all steps of production. Not only do they do all of their web hosting and printing powered by renewable energy, they also use non-toxic dyes and FSC-certified 100% post consumer recycled paper for all their business materials. While they aim to use renewable energy for most production, any electric energy is offset by Arcadia Power, a local wind and solar clean energy provider. Plus, all of their packaging is compostable, so your straws arrive as low impact as possible.

While Simply Straws is all about low impact materials, when it comes to giving back to the planet their impact is huge! As a member of 1% For the Planet, over the last 10 years Simply Straws has donated more than $100 million to nonprofits that support positive environmental change, focusing on hot button issues like water, energy, deforestation, and more. From starting The Last Straw campaign which encourages restaurants to only give plastic straws to customers that request them, to donating to The Lonely Whale foundation to promote an ocean without plastic straws in it, Simply Straws goes above and beyond to make sure they impact our planet positively. But they haven’t stopped there: they’re proud to be a certified B Corp company, meeting rigorous third party standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. By using business as a force for good, they aim to redefine what “success” means, putting more weight on positive impact than revenue.

The cannabis plant produces more fiber per acre than common textile crops like cotton and flax, and actually adds nutrients to the soil instead of depleting them! Hemp is strong, breathable, and moisture wicking, and it requires minimal dye during fabric production due to its high absorbency qualities.
