Klean Kanteen

A Sustainable Partner

Who They Are

Flashback to 2002, when reusable stainless steel water bottles were few and far between. Klean Kanteen founder Ryan Seals set out to find an alternative to wasteful single-use plastic bottles. Using local hardware store finds, he pieced together a prototype, and the first Klean Kanteen was born! By 2004, the first Klean Kanteen Classic water bottle was introduced to the market. To get the word out, Kanteens were shared with music festival goers and nature loves across the US. Eco-conscious people fell in love with Klean Kanteen's reusable bottles, and the word spread.

In 2005, the Klean Kanteen torch was passed onto brother-sister team Jeff Cresswell and Michelle Kalberer, who have built upon Seals’ original vision by designing a unique and constantly growing line of stainless steel solutions to single-use items, from bottles, to food storage, and more.

We treat our customers like good neighbors and our partners like dear friends. We have stakeholders, not shareholders, and our bottom line is simple: to provide affordable, safe, healthy, high quality products and accessories and to promote and encourage health, sustainability and environmental awareness.” -Jeff Cresswell and Michelle Kalberer

Why We Like Them

Klean Kanteen treats everyone like family, from the employees at their Chico, California headquarters, to their overseas operations and vendors worldwide. In Chico, they donate Kanteens to local organizations and schools for both charities and fundraisers, and have set up a number of Klean Kanteen water stations that provide local communities and events with free, filtered water. Plus, every Klean family staff member is given 24 hours of paid volunteer time annually to spend supporting the diverse nonprofits of Chico.

Klean Kanteen also works to find new ways to reduce their environmental footprint as a brand. It is for this reason that they became a member of 1% For the Planet, donating over 1% of their annual sales to nonprofits dedicated to protecting the health of our planet.

Always working to be the best they can be, Klean Kanteen joined the ranks of Certified B Corporations, an independent group of companies that meet rigorous standards of performance, accountability, and transparency. In addition to adopting new business practices that support environmental causes and fair labor laws, they have collaborated with like-minded environmental nonprofits and organizations that aim to educate the public about today’s most important health and environmental topics.

Klean Kanteen recognizes that production inherently creates a carbon footprint, so they offset their footprint through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Green Mountain Shipping Program offsets. Through these programs, they are able to donate to renewable projects such as wind and solar, and offer carbon neutral shipping to online customers. To date, Klean is supporting 88,000 kWH of Renewable Energy through their REC’s purchases, equivalent to 100% of the energy usage at the Klean HQ.

Last but not least, Klean Kanteen products are handmade in Chinese factories that are socially and environmentally responsible, meeting strict standards for quality, safety, fair labor, and ethical business practices. Through third-party social audits, regular factory visits by Klean, materials and product safety testing, and quality assurance inspections, they ensure that each factory and its workers meet the Klean Kanteen family standard.

As a member of the grass family, bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. It requires no irrigation, pesticides or fertilizers to grow, and can be harvested within 3-5 years, as compared to approximately 30+ years for traditional hardwoods. Bamboo is extremely adaptable and produces more oxygen per acre than large tree species, while using a fraction of the water to grow. Its durable and lightweight qualities make bamboo a great alternative for hard wood products!
