Green Toys

100% Recycled, Made in the USA

Who They Are

Looking around her children’s playroom, Laurie Hyman, co-founder of Green Toys, was at a loss. She felt like she was sitting in a plastic wasteland, unsure if the toys around her were even safe for her children to play with. Determined to make a change, she and her husband, Robert von Goeben, founded Green Toys, a company dedicated to socially responsible and environmentally friendly children’s products. They take the simple, classic toy designs that kids love and give them a sustainable twist that’s great for your kids–and the planet.

Green Toys are truly green because they’re made from 100% recycled plastic, primarily recycled from milk jugs! Manufactured right here in the USA, the milk jugs are collected, cleaned, and reprocessed into raw recycled plastic before being mixed with food-safe, mineral based color dyes. These classic toys are designed with the natural benefits of unstructured play in mind, encouraging imagination at its finest. From innovative materials to award-winning designs, Green Toys is here to prove that earth-friendly fun doesn’t have to be hard.

Why We Like Them

Green Toys was founded for one reason: to make safe, eco-friendly toys your little one will actually want to play with. Based in California, a state known for their strict environmental and safety laws, all Green Toys products surpass US and international standards for BPA and phthalates, and conform to The CPSIA, ASTM F963, EN 71 and ISO 8124 standards–leaving you with only the best toxin-free toys.

With products made from 100% recycled plastic from milk jugs, one of the cleanest and safest plastics on the market, Green Toys has removed 54 million milk jugs from our landfills to date! They take your recycled jugs, reprocess them, and turn them into fresh, clean plastic that’s mixed with mineral-based coloring to give their toys the signature Green Toys look. But to them, it’s not just about recycling–it’s about investing in the circular economy. Instead of using wasteful virgin plastic, their recycled milk jugs give new purpose to something that was once considered trash. And your kids will get it too! By teaching kids that old, used up milk jugs can become their new favorite toy, they can start understanding sustainability in action!

Co-founder Robert says that one of the best parts about manufacturing products completely in the United States is being able to be a constant presence. They spend time in the manufacturing facilities, observing their product and making sure everything is being made sustainably, ethically, and mindfully. What’s more, by manufacturing and selling here in the US, Green Toys factories emit less greenhouse gases (a win-win!)

When you purchase a Green Toy, you won’t find any blister packs, twist ties or cellophane wrappers with your toy–just 100% recycled cardboard with minimal color using soy-based inks! When a toy needs a little extra love (aka some more security so it doesn’t fall out of the box), they integrate packaging components made from 100% recycled water bottles. All this has paid off, awarding Green Toys the Greener Packaging Award, the nation’s only independent sustainable packaging award.

The Green Toys family believes that the best way to encourage environmental change is through the goods people buy and use every day–starting with classic children’s products. From material makeup to product packaging, they deliver unquestionably safe products parents and kids everywhere are sure to love.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Products that are labeled as BPA free do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic products. Studies on BPA exposure have shown that high levels of BPA could lead to hormone disruption, effects on behavior and brain function, reproductive problems, breast cancer, heart disease, infertility, and more.

This product was made in the United States. Buying locally made items helps to reduce harmful emissions that result from transportation during and after the production process. Purchasing products made in the United States also ensures that the items are produced in ways that meet strict safety and labor standards.

Companies can adopt multiple practices to dye their textiles and products in a more environmentally safe way. Low impact dyes usually do not contain toxins such as heavy metals, plasticizers, fluorocarbons, and formaldehyde. Sustainable dyes can also be water or plant based, or use less water than conventional dyeing methods.

Recycling is the process of taking an otherwise-discarded item or material and cleaning, sorting, and breaking it down into its basic form (such as fibers or pellets). This material is then used to produce new items. Recycling keeps useful materials from being discarded in landfills, prevents resource extraction due to the creation of new materials, and provides a new life for used items. Recycling can utilize both pre-consumer waste (materials left over from production) or post-consumer materials (used clothing, empty water bottles, etc). This product is made from 100% recycled content.

Recycled plastic utilizes salvaged post-industrial plastic scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers, and transforms them into new products. The containers are sorted, crushed, and then heated to form resins, which are liquid plastics that can harden into new shapes. These resins can be molded and used to create anything from carpet to outdoor furniture. Recycling plastic lowers the amount of petroleum extracted and the production of greenhouse gasses associated with first-time plastic production. Plus, by using these existing materials, we’re benefiting from the original energy and resources spent to create them in the first place, while diverting waste from the landfill.
