Elate Cosmetics

Go Forth and Feel Beautiful

Who They Are

When Melodie Reynolds founded Elate Cosmetics, she knew she wanted to transform the mundane daily makeup routine into something closer to a ritual. Just because something is done every day, or on most days, doesn’t mean it can’t be special. While many conventional makeup brands cut corners on packaging and ingredients, Melodie chose to create a different product experience, and has been committed to sustainable makeup options ever since. Originally from Canada, Melodie wanted to create a brand that empowered women and created an emphasis on self love, for yourself and the world you live in. Melodie has been known to her customers and colleagues as a fierce, passionate and driven woman with a huge heart. Makeup within our society holds a meaning that is inspired by vanity and expectations, Melodie wanted to change that world view and create an environment that creates joy and integrity. Elate works to empower people to see the true beauty in making healthy choices.

Elate Cosmetics is a firm believer in conscious beauty, centered around the intentional, purposeful and ritual side of wearing makeup. Putting on makeup can seem like an automatic function at times, but Elate Cosmetics believes the true beauty is within the ritual itself. The more we focus on the rituals of self-care, we will become more confident in our skin.

Why We Like Them

Elate Cosmetics goes above and beyond to provide healthy and sustainable products. One of our favorite things about Elate Cosmetics is their ingredients! Elate products are 90% organic, and as many ingredients as possible are sourced fair trade. They utilize ingredients such as bamboo, mica, shea butter, and coconut, replacing harsh chemicals with ingredients right from nature. Shea butter, for example, is known to have fatty acids and vitamins that help keep your skin soft and beautiful. With anti-inflammatory and healing properties, shea butter is a valuable ingredient that sets Elate apart from other cosmetics.

Elate Cosmetics is focused on conscious beauty in all aspects – including their cruelty-free standards. Elate Cosmetics believes no person or animal should be harmed in the making of their products, so they’re hyper-aware of each ingredient. They’re driven by kindness, never fear or shame, and only partner with companies who follow those same parameters.

Elate translates this compassionate focus into their packaging as well. In an effort to reduce all waste products from their company, Elate Cosmetics uses no additional packaging or boxes. Instead of typical plastic cases, Elate utilizes bamboo for most of their packaging. Bamboo is a self-generating natural resource sourced from China, where they work with a green-certified, fair-trade manufacturer. They also provide refillable options for most products, and refills and pressed eye colors come in plastic-free seed paper envelopes!  After you’ve replaced the refill, you can plant the envelope in your garden or a pot and they’ll grow a patch of beautiful wildflowers.

To top it all off, Elate is also a certified B-corp, meaning they’re required to meet rigorous social and environmental standards in all aspects of their business.

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

As a member of the grass family, bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. It requires no irrigation, pesticides or fertilizers to grow, and can be harvested within 3-5 years, as compared to approximately 30+ years for traditional hardwoods. Bamboo is extremely adaptable and produces more oxygen per acre than large tree species, while using a fraction of the water to grow. Its durable and lightweight qualities make bamboo a great alternative for hard wood products!
