Cruelty Free

All companies that are included on PETA’s cruelty-free list have signed a statement verifying that they don’t use ingredients or create finished products that help conduct or pay for any tests on animals.
Paraben Free
Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.
Sulfate Free
Sulfates are synthetic chemical ingredients commonly used in beauty products and household cleaners, like shampoos and dish soaps. You can usually identify sulfates in an ingredients list by looking out for the most common types: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLC) and Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLES). These chemicals, often derived from petroleum, are used to help form the “lather” we’re used to seeing in our beauty and cleaning products. When used in the shower or sink, these chemicals can flow through the pipes and into our waterways. Synthetic sulfates have been linked to allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and hair loss, and some studies suggest they contain carcinogenic ingredients.

I love the design for the shampoo bar but it was not good for my hair type. My hair type is a bit thick and semi-wavy/straight and did not work well with me. After continously using it for several weeks, my hair started to gather build-up and it was a complete mess. It left my scalp itchy and my hair sticky and waxy. Also, it left my hair dry. I wouldn’t recommend it to people with my hair type however, it might work for other people.

Hi Hannah, thank you for sharing your feedback! Hair is so unique and we’re sorry this bar didn’t work out as well as anticipated. It sounds like one of our HiBARs might work better – the Maintain bars are great for getting rid of buildup, and we love the Volumize bars for wavy hair! If we can help find another great option for you, we’re here to help at support@earthhero.com!

This somehow dried out my scalp and left my hair feeling greasy. It also got horribly stuck in the tin container it came in I had to cut it out.

My last shampoo bar was the apple cider one and I’m glad I gave this one a shot. This has worked far better for my hair, which I would characterize as quite nappy and I have a scalp with a dandruff issue. No shampoo has really worked to completely curtail my dandruff issue, but this bar has really abated much of it. This try has worked out great for me. (Also, these bars last for a really long time and lather well, in my experience.)
Will say, however, I would wish there was an option to not have the bar come in a tin. I can recycle them, but I prefer not having to deal with one regardless.

Tiffany Cracraft –
How long should one shampoo bar last? I have fine, straight shoulder length hair and I wash my hair every 3 days.

EarthHero –
Hi Tiffany! We think that you’ll find that this shampoo bar lasts about as long as a standard bottle of liquid shampoo. It’s highly concentrated and lathers up quite nicely! To extend its life, just be sure to allow it to properly dry between uses. We like to pair it with a slatted soap dish like this one!

With other bars I’ve tried, they would leave a residue on my scalp or roots. My hair didn’t seem clean after. This bar doesn’t leave residue. I recently cut off 12″ of my hair so this has been lasting a long time. It’s been about 7 months and I think I’ve used up about half of it. I only wash my hair about 3-4x/wk. I have very thick hair. When it was longer, the weight of it would tame some of the frizz but with it being short and this bar being somehwat drying, I get a lot of frizz and fluff. If I know I’m not going anywhere, I don’t bother using anything else afterward and just let it be a frizzy mess but when I have to be seen by others, I usually use a conditioner or oil (argon/coconut) to moisturize and tame. The tin might be useful for taking it on trips, but I just leave this on a slotted soap dish in the shower so it doesn’t get gross.

Supports a good company and creates less waste. I still need occasional conditioner bars for my long hair but I have only used shampoo bars for a few years now.

My hair is pretty oily and this left my hair feeling very heavy even though I worked very hard to wash all the product out. Smells nice, though, and it lathers very easily.

Was really excited about this, unfortunately it did not live to my expectations. I love that it eliminates the use of plastic containers and it does last quite longer than our regular bottled shampoo. But, it’s just not working for my hair. It lathers pretty well but once i start rinsing i wont be able to run my fingers through my hair to untangle the ends of my hair. My scalp started getting flaky and whenever i brush my hair, i’ll see white residue in my brush. It left my hair really really dry.

Am glad to not be using shampoo in plastic bottles! Do close your eyes when applying, as this can sting some. It cleans hair well. I store it on the upside down lid to dry, and keep it out of the shower unless I am washing hair. Agree with other comments, that conditioner is needed after washing.

Question
Jess –
How long does this usually last for or how many shampoo bottles is it equivalent to?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Jess! These bars typically last longer than normal liquid shampoo (around 3-4 months) but it all depends on how often you wash your hair and how long it is. We also recommend using a slotted soap dish to help the bar dry between uses. 😀

Question
Kayden Gillum –
Would this wash out hair dye? I dyed my hair right before I discovered zero waste and I want it to last as long as possible
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
Admin EarthHero –
Hey Kayden – since this shampoo bar is made with natural, planet friendly ingredients, it doesn’t contain any of the harsh chemicals typically found in shampoo that can strip hair color more easily! We’ve heard that many shampoo-bar users experience longer lasting hair color, but we always recommend testing out a small strip if you’re worried!

While this product smells great and I love the packaging of it, it is very very hard to Lather through my very thick and long hair. I imagine it would be easier for thinner hair. I will continue to use it because of sustainability but it’s a lot of work to get my scalp scrubbed.

Thanks for the feedback! One tip that may help is to lather the Shampoo Bar in your hands instead of using it directly on hair. This should help you get more product through to your hair and scalp. 🙂

This is a pretty legit shampoo bar . . . it lasted us quite a while, and the smell was nice. The black tin in which it came in was a bonus. I’d certainly recommend this to a friend. I know my hair always felt nice and clean after I used it. The only thing I have to say is that you should DEFINITELY pair this with a conditioner. Will buy again.

Hey Amanda! Some great conditioners to pair with this product are either this refillable option by Plaine Products or this conditioner bar by HiBar!

Hi Marsha, great question! The shampoo bar has Tea Tree oil which is antibacterial, antifungal, and helps with dandruff, however we haven’t received feedback from anybody using it with folliculitis.
