BPA Free

Products that are labeled as BPA free do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic products. Studies on BPA exposure have shown that high levels of BPA could lead to hormone disruption, effects on behavior and brain function, reproductive problems, breast cancer, heart disease, infertility, and more.

Plant Based Resin

Plant Based Resins are used as an alternative to fully-synthetic plastics. Instead of using Petroleum as the main base ingredient to form plastic, some companies have started replacing a portion of the ingredients with plant and vegetable extracts. This lowers the amount of resources extracted to create purely synthetic products, and often provides a use for agricultural byproducts such as corn or flax. Some plant based resins are made from 100% plant materials, and can be composted in industrial facilities. EarthHero recommends checking with your local compost facility to determine which items are safe to compost.

  1. Question

Please explain to me where the general public would find industrial level composting? You cannot place it in your regular recycling bin and hence it goes to waste. You cannot put it in a residential composter since it needs excessive heat. So is this not just green washing? PLA may sound great but is it really?

    • EarthHero

Hi Claire! You make a great point. While many communities across the country ARE introducing industrial compost facilities for their residents, the majority of the US does not have access to compost; backyard, or industrial. EarthHero operates out of Boulder, CO, and every apartment building and business is required to offer a compost bin that is then picked up and composted at an industrial facility. We’re extremely lucky in this regard, but recognize that this is not the case for all. For this reason, compostable options present a conundrum. If a compost facility is available, then these are an incredible alternative to single-use plastic items. Additionally, they are made from a renewable resource (corn) and do not rely on a petroleum-based product, aiding in the necessary departure from fossil fuels. At the end of the day, durable, reusable options are the biggest win, but we do appreciate a plastic-free, industrially-compostable option when and if it is applicable. Thank you for asking!
