About the Company

TerraCycle

What is truly zero waste? Most of us recycle what we can–but what about everything else that can’t go into your curbside collection bin?

TerraCycle uses their free collections programs and their unique Zero Waste Boxes to recycle, upcycle, or reuse hard-to-recycle waste from communities across the country–instead of sending it to the incinerator or landfill. By treating trash as a material with true value, TerraCycle is changing our global waste system from a linear one to a more circular one–where things are designed to last for years, then be remade into awesome new products (not sent to the landfill!)

To get started, first pick the type of “trash” in your life you want to tackle. From cigarette butts to candy wrappers and even cleaning supplies, choose where you think the most non-recyclable waste in your life is coming from. Next, pick your size box. Do you live alone, or are you part of a family of 5? Once you get the ideal box for your life, simply start collecting the accepted waste to send back to TerraCycle!

Live the zero waste life of your dreams, without giving up what you love, thanks to TerraCycle.

  1. Question

    Brittany

What is the privacy expectation with these boxes? For example, if senstive information gets put into the box, like unshredded mail, is it likely that the information will be relatively safe as it isn’t going into a public space? Or can there be no guarantee of that? I ask because I don’t like shredding since that isn’t typically easily recyclable, and I don’t know if TerraCycle can even recycle it. So I would prefer to just include full pieces of mail in the boxes, but don’t want to risk private information.

Hi Brittany! While TerraCycle’s sorting locations are not open to the public, they do not recommend disposing of sensitive information or personal documents in their boxes. Certain cities and municipalities are able to recycle shredded paper in specialty locations, so we recommend checking with your city to see if this is offered! Additionally, this can be a helpful tool to locate a place to recycle shredded paper 😀

  5. Question

    Tatiana

I’m not sure I understand the concept. Am I paying for a one-time-use box to be sent to me so I can send you things I can’t usually recycle? Or is this a one-time or subscription fee to get the box every month or something? Not saying I won’t do it, but I don’t think I can afford to buy a one-time-use recycling box very often, so I’d like to know what it is exactly. Thank you.

      EarthHero

Hi Tatiana! The price above is for one TerraCycle box which covers the shipping cost to send the full box back and the cost to properly recycle these materials! Once it’s full, you mail it back to TerraCycle with the included prepaid label, you can re-order another box. The reason it’s not a subscription program is to cover the cost of getting the items inside properly recycled! If you have additional questions, please send them to hello@earthhero.com and we are always happy to help out 🙂

Hi there! The All-In-One Terracycle boxes can accept cans, but if your municipal recycler accepts them as well, we recommend saving space in your box for other materials!

Hi Julie – adding in any paper packaging to the Kitchen box should be just fine. If you find that you have other, non-kitchen related items that you want to try to recycle, we suggest checking out TerraCycle’s All-in-One Box. This covers just about any room in your house and includes items from paper or plastic packaging all the way to electronic waste!
