We keep ours under the sink and have never had an issue with smell! The filter tends to get a bit moldy because we don’t empty it very often, but still works well. I don’t use bags with this bin, as I’ve found the biodegradable ones don’t hold up long enough and the stainless steel is pretty easy to clean.

Question
Jean Murray –
We have one of your compost bins and my daughter keeps putting scotch tape over all of the holes because she says that fruit flies will get in the compost bin. I keep taking the scotch tape off. So far there are no fruit flies. Why should I tell her that you put holes in the cover? I wonder if fruit flies could get in, but they do not want to get out or they can’t find their way out. Thank you for your answer.

Hi Jean! Great question. We are happy to help! The holes in this gorgeous stainless steel bin are there to allow air to filter into the bin. This helps mitigate the bad smells that come from decomposing foods and also aids in the breakdown of organic matter. The microorganisms responsible for breaking down food waste love oxygen! A few tips to keep fruit flies at bay are keeping your bin in the freezer (no smell!), adding a squeeze of lemon or a few drop of lavender, peppermint, or clove essential oils. Fruit flies can’t stand these scents! Fruit flies are also more common in the warm summer months so taking the compost our more frequently will also deter a family of flies from moving in. 😀

So far so good with our new compost bin! We’ve filled it a couple times now. The lid seals well against the body of the canister, and in combination with the charcoal filter, you couldn’t even smell the pineapple rind we added to it.

I love the compost bin. It’s a great size and looks nice on my counter. No smells at all! However, the 3 compost bags that they send you are not good quality. One of them completely torr open when I was trying to just open it to put it in the bin. Fortunately I wasn’t planning on using bags with mine so it’s not a big deal.

Question
Marilyn Steele, PhD –
It’s a good looking very useful container. How do you change the charcoal filter? can’t get the top off.

Hi, Marilyn! You can change the charcoal filter by removing the lid as you would to add compost, flipping it upside down, and pinching the charcoal filter that lays across the top 🙂

We are keeping the compost bin outside our balcony door because we saw reviews about fruit flies even with the carbon filters. But I can’t smell a thing so far, although we haven’t had the bin for long enough to develop much stench. It does its job, and I can’t smell a thing so far, so so far so good. Excited to reduce our food waste with the help of this compost bin.

This compost bin is classy enough to leave sitting on your kitchen counter; which is a great reminder to add those food scraps instead of placing them in the garbage!
