Paraben Free

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalate Free

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Sulfate Free

Sulfates are synthetic chemical ingredients commonly used in beauty products and household cleaners, like shampoos and dish soaps. You can usually identify sulfates in an ingredients list by looking out for the most common types: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLC) and Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLES). These chemicals, often derived from petroleum, are used to help form the “lather” we’re used to seeing in our beauty and cleaning products. When used in the shower or sink, these chemicals can flow through the pipes and into our waterways. Synthetic sulfates have been linked to allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and hair loss, and some studies suggest they contain carcinogenic ingredients.

Sustainability Features

  • Produced and packaged in Chicago, Illinois, USA

  • Unscented: Vegetable Soap [Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Sunflowerate, Glycerin, Water, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil] Lemon: Vegetable Soap [Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Sunflowerate, Glycerin, Water, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil], Organic Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil. *lemon essential oil naturally contains the potential allergen limonene.
  • Additional info: sodium cocoate is the chemical name of coconut oil that has been saponified (aka 'made into soap'). Sodium sunflowerate is the chemical name of sunflower seed oil that has been saponified. There will be some coconut and sunflower seed oils left in the soap after they are saponified, due to the fact that Meliora uses sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process. Leaving these excess oils in the soap ensures there is NO remaining lye in the finished product, and gives the soap its lather and moisture. This process is also called 'superfatting'. Glycerin is naturally created when the oils are converted into soap–and helps to keep skin soft, and is an effective solvent, making it great for dissolving stains and dirt. Water is used in the soapmaking process to dissolve the lye, and then is dried out over several weeks, resulting in a hard soap bar with very little water leftover. There is ~5% water leftover in these soap bars, compared to liquid soap that contains ~60% water.

About the Company

Meliora began when their co-founder, Kate, began wondering what was really in her cleaning products. After discovering companies aren’t actually required to list all of their ingredients (what?!), Kate set out to create cleaning products with simple, earth-friendly ingredients that are listed on the front of the package. Meliora means “better” in Latin, and that’s what these cleaning products are made to be. They’re conscious about choosing ingredients that are effective, safe for the home and body, and cause no trouble for Mother Earth after the chores are said and done. Meliora boasts the MADE SAFEⓇ seal and Leaping Bunny on all products, ensuring that no products or ingredients build up on our bodies, in the environment, are toxic for the oceans, or are tested on animals.

    Works great!

Perfect for use with my no-waste dishwashing brush! However you’ll want to put it on a soap tray for best results… otherwise it will end up sticking to your counters and waste quite a bit of product/make a big mess.

This dish soap lathers up well and I can tell it will last me a long time! I normally use this soap in between running my dishwasher. It does tend to leave a residue on my dishes though.

    Good, not great

    lojocu (verified owner)

This is a good alternative to standard dish soap, however, it does take some getting used to. I highly recommend drying dishes right after washing as it does leave residue. I also always keep Bar Keepers friend around by sink for my pots and pans that need more scrubbing power. That being said, I have re-purchased this bar soap, and will keep purchasing.

    Works good

    twashburn6441 (verified owner)

It lathers up good. Mild lemon scent. Washed the dishes good, cut through grease well, and did not leave a waxy residue. Some water spots but none that is to be concerned about. I like it! Had to use/test it as soon as I picked up from delivery.

    Kissing plastic bottles good bye

    stefanydorado (verified owner)

The soap works very well, I was very nervous to buy it but I’m glad I did. Esthetically looks so much better on its cedar soap dish compared to the ugly plastic bottles.

    Organic Castile Disg Soap

    mtilson62 (verified owner)

Great Idea . Works better than some others I’ve tried. Slight residue. A stronger lemon scent would be much appreciated. Can hardly smell the lemon. Some minor improvements and it would be perfect.

    Saving water!

    Krystal (verified owner)

We’ve made the switch to Castile bar dish soap and are happy we did. Saving water from liquid dish soap feels good and the products look beautiful on our counter tops with less bulky plastic packaging hanging around.

    Better than bottled dish soap.

    D.G. Sifuentes (verified owner)

At first I thought this item would be slightly bigger as the photo implies that, but it is a solid so I gather it would have a good life span cleaning my dishes. The first thing I noticed was the really nice scent. It is not overbearing, but a refreshing coconut and lemon scent. My kitty was even attracted to the scent. I am glad to find a great alternative to bottled dish soap.

I love the concept of this product but it is a little harder to use than liquid dish soap – I sometimes have to scrub twice because the pot doesn’t quite feel clean the first time. Twice does it though. I actually wish it would soften up some if it would allow me to get more soap on my sponge.

    Zero Waste

    gearandgo (verified owner)

I was really attracted to this product for its zero-waste quality, and I’ve been more than impressed. It suds up easily, smells nice, and seems to clean all my dishes adequately (I live in a dry cabin without running water, so I always end up with dubious cleanliness). Anyway, I love that it is easily accessible; I don’t need to free up a hand to pick up the bottle of detergent. It won’t travel well for when we’re camping, but it works for our cabin.
