Plastic Bank Partner

This brand works with Plastic Bank to measure, reduce, and offset their plastic usage by funding recycling and ocean cleanup efforts in underdeveloped communities around the world. This means that in addition to helping clean up our oceans, they’re also investing in recycling infrastructure in developing nations. A brand’s partnership with Plastic Bank involves offsetting various amounts of their plastic usage, from partial, to full (plastic neutral) or even offsetting more plastic than they produce (plastic negative).

B Corp

The B Lab is a third-party, non-profit organization that certifies companies as socially and environmentally responsible. B Corps are businesses that go above and beyond traditional business models and aim to create positive change in the world through their practices. These companies must meet rigorous transparency and accountablity standards, while doing what is best for people and the environment.

BPA Free

Products that are labeled as BPA free do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic products. Studies on BPA exposure have shown that high levels of BPA could lead to hormone disruption, effects on behavior and brain function, reproductive problems, breast cancer, heart disease, infertility, and more.

Plant Based Resin

Plant Based Resins are used as an alternative to fully-synthetic plastics. Instead of using Petroleum as the main base ingredient to form plastic, some companies have started replacing a portion of the ingredients with plant and vegetable extracts. This lowers the amount of resources extracted to create purely synthetic products, and often provides a use for agricultural byproducts such as corn or flax. Some plant based resins are made from 100% plant materials, and can be composted in industrial facilities. EarthHero recommends checking with your local compost facility to determine which items are safe to compost.

As a member of the grass family, bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. It requires no irrigation, pesticides or fertilizers to grow, and can be harvested within 3-5 years, as compared to approximately 30+ years for traditional hardwoods. Bamboo is extremely adaptable and produces more oxygen per acre than large tree species, while using a fraction of the water to grow. Its durable and lightweight qualities make bamboo a great alternative for hard wood products!

Recycled Plastic

Recycled plastic utilizes salvaged post-industrial plastic scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers, and transforms them into new products. The containers are sorted, crushed, and then heated to form resins, which are liquid plastics that can harden into new shapes. These resins can be molded and used to create anything from carpet to outdoor furniture. Recycling plastic lowers the amount of petroleum extracted and the production of greenhouse gasses associated with first-time plastic production. Plus, by using these existing materials, we’re benefiting from the original energy and resources spent to create them in the first place, while diverting waste from the landfill.

While it has a nice look to it and is compostable, I was frustrated with it not getting sudsy. I gave it a couple of weeks but was having to use it as a normal sponge with unnecessary storage of soap in the handle. I am sorry to say that I ended up getting rid of it and reverting back to a basic soap sponge combo from the grocery store.

Hi there! We’re so sorry that this sponge didn’t work for you. The true worker behind suds is often the dish soap one chooses to use and trying an alternative soap would be our recommendation! Just a heads up: while plant-based in composition, this sponge is actually not compostable. For a biodegradable “sponge” option, we like these. 😀

  2. Question

I know it says at the end of it’s life, you just buy a new replacement head but I was wondering what do you do with the old, used one? It doesn’t say whether you can compost it/recycle/etc.

Hi, Ashley! This sponge and refill are made with materials that reduce our footprint like plant-based plastics, renewable natural cellulose, and recycled materials that divert waste from landfills. While natural cellulose is compostable, we do not recommend composting the sponge due to potentially harmful ingredients that the sponge may have come in contact with during its life! For now, the trash is the best option for used refill sponges. If you’re looking for a recyclable and compostable option, we love this one 🙂

I was really excited for this product so I could replace my all plastic handheld sponge stick. And the bamboo part is fine. Kind of bulky. The sponge though barely made it through a couple washes. Already unraveling and flaking blue material on my dishes. Good thing I bought the replacements because one sponge will only get a week use before it’s out of commission. And I just dont feel like its getting my dishes clean either. Glad I tried it but I’ll have to find something else.
