Organic Wool
Organic wool presents less harm than conventional wool production, as both the feed and forage for the sheep must be organic, and no pesticides or insecticides can be used to treat the sheep. Organic wool can be harvested yearly without harming the sheep, and does not involve toxic “sheep dips” where farmers drench the sheep in harmful chemicals. Organically raised sheep are housed in ways that prevent overgrazing, and are not dependent on antibiotics or other drugs, as they live in healthy conditions. Wool is highly absorbent, so it requires little water to dye the finished fabrics. Wool is odor resistant, so you can get away with skipping washes (and saving water!), plus when wool is untreated it’s biodegradable.

These dryer balls smell like farm animals. I am literally in disbelief that I am even writing this complaint. I had to douse them in an essential oil just to get the animal smell off of my BRAND NEW down-alternative comforter. I had no other apparatus to use in the dryer with the essential oils. Ps…I grew up in a cow town. This smell is UNMISTAKABLE.
To make matters worse…EarthHero sent me a fairly insulting reply to my request for a refund stating to just put the dryer balls AND my new WHITE comforter out in the sun for a few hours and all the bad smells will go away. #hardeyeroll #refundplease

Hi Kalyn, We are so sorry to hear that you have had such a negative experience with these dryer balls. Since these dryer balls are made of 100% organic lambswool, the “farm” scent you are describing is not uncommon and is something many other customers have experienced. As a company dedicated to sustainability, we always suggest pursuing DIY solutions (when applicable) to address a product issue. This is why we suggested letting the product air out to shed the scent you described – a carbon-free troubleshooting method that we hoped would solve this issue. We are sorry to hear you took offense to this suggestion. Our team has followed up on your email to find a solution and get your laundry smelling fresh in no time!

I have been using these with at least five loads a week for months and I’m not convinced that they either 1) actually soften your clothes and 2) speed up drying time. I didn’t expect them to make clothes as soft as liquid softener would but our clothes don’t feel even close to soft. And other people have said they speed up drying time but I haven’t found that to be the case at all. They also seem to suck any nice smell left by your detergent from your clothes.

Hi Lisa, thank you for sharing your feedback! We’re sorry to hear these dryer balls aren’t working as well for your laundry as you had hoped. Many factors can impact the way that dryer balls work. Many customers have found that slightly smaller loads give the balls space to bounce in the dryer drum, thus speeding up drying time. The more the balls can bounce in the drum, the more space they have to rub against clothing, too, causing softer clothes. We hope these tips help you enjoy these dryer balls a bit more!

I love having these for the dryer. They can speed up wash time; because they help break up the clothes. I got them as a gift around December, I use them weekly and would definitely recommend them. <3

I did read the reviews talking about the smell, but chanced it. I don’t know if it’s just my batch, I did notice a smell, but only when I put my nose directly on it. I’m quite sensitive to fragrance, so I would say the smell is completely mild. I’m not sure how to describe the scent, but I think it smelled like something natural. I don’t know why I think of a farm when I smelled it. I didn’t bother putting essential oils because I prefer my clothes to be fragrance free. I’ve used it a few times now. Whatever scent it came with will disappear/fade completely after a few uses, and it doesn’t transfer to the clothes at all anyway. It came at the exact time I was about to put my clothes in the dryer, so I used it right away. The instructions say to use it with like-colors or do a drying load without the clothes in it for the first use to avoid it possibly transferring lint, but I have to pay for drying time, so again, I chanced it. There was no lint transfer for me, so I’d say it’s fine. I can’t comment on whether it helps static or not. 99% of my clothes are made from natural materials, even before purchasing, I didn’t have a problem with static. It does make the dryer nosier, but that doesn’t bother me. I bought this hoping it’ll speed up the drying time. It doesn’t… not for me anyway. It does prevent your clothes or sheets from twisting in the dryer, and as a result, “fluffier” clothing with less wrinkles. I bought this on sale, I think for 35% off, so that softens the blow for me. I do believe it sucks some moisture from the air because when the dryer is done, I noticed the balls are a bit damp. Would I purchase this again knowing what I know now? On sale, yes. Full price, no. It’s nice that it stops my laundry from twisting together, but since it doesn’t cut down my drying time at all, it’s not necessary.

Got 2 sets of these about a year ago and have been using them ever since. Cuts time off of drying so saves electricity (and quarters, if you have to use the laundromat). I use them when I wash towels, sheets, and my boyfriend’s clothes (I hang dry mine). They really help avoid tangling so rarely have to take some items out and then run the dryer longer. After a year still looking great, and I love that when I do need to get new ones way in the future that these can be composted (will probably let my dog play with them before composting, she’s always eyeing them like I’m keeping toys away from her)

Decided on these to reduce drying time and energy use. I’ve noticed mild results, nothing crazy, but it does help with larger loads to avoid tangling and random humid patches after the cycle is over.

I’ve been eyeing wool dryer balls for a while, and decided to take the plunge!
I LOVE how the product is sourced, the responsibility taken to create them, and how it empowers Nepalese artisans who make them. These 6 balls in a pack work perfectly in my medium to large laundry loads to get my clothes dryer faster, AND my clothes are fluffier!
It has a slight sheep smell to them, but no, it’s not strong, and it doesn’t transfer to my clothes. You can always add essential oil drops to them if you want to. There are much larger ones on the market, but from what I understand, those can get noisy in the dryer. These WORK so well, and are durable. I know they’re going to last me a long time, and best thing is… I no longer need to buy dryer sheets!

These definitely reduce the static in my laundry, which is impressive given how dry it is where I live all the time. I can’t tell if they make my laundry dry faster or not, because I always let it run the full “delicate” cycle on low heat and I’ve never had a problem with that drying even jeans. Probably the dry climate, again.
They do increase the noise of the dryer a bit as the balls tumble around, but it isn’t noticeable to me outside of the laundry room, so it isn’t a big deal. The only actual problem that I have with them is that my cats desperately want to play with them. They’re used to wool balls being toys, so they are not convinced that they shouldn’t play with these ones.

I’m a college student in my first apartment, and I can’t believe I waited so long to use these. I use an old machine in my building that usually takes two tries to dry, and this just made it so I don’t have to pay to dry my clothes twice. To give it a nice smell, like dryer sheets would, I add a couple drops of my favorite essential oils to the dryer balls and it leaves all my clothes smelling wonderful.

These dryer balls arrived with a strong, sweet, candy-like odor that is pretty offensive. Fortunately, they do not seem to transfer that odor to laundry, and after a few uses, the odor is finally going away. Other than that, they perform like other wool dryer balls I have tried in the past.

I love using these things! I wish I had known about them years ago. Depending on load size and type of clothing, they reduce drying time anywhere from 25 to 50% and leave my clothes feeling soft. I haven’t really noticed a reduction in static cling though, which is unfortunate, but it’s only a problem for a handful of my garments. I’ve used these about 30 times and they still look like they did when I first got them. Supposedly I have ~970 more uses out of them. After that, they will be much welcomed in my compost bin.

I haven’t noticed on drying time cuts, but really that’s only because I use the dryer before bed and let them dry as I sleep. I can definitely attest to them softening the fabric, tho. I love these and I use them every time.

I don’t do laundry very often and loathe doing it because I’m in an apartment building and yea…I don’t have to say much else. Anyway, these really do hold up to what they say about drying your clothes in less time. Dryers in my building go for 38 min a clip and I was able to dry a load of sheets with a heavy wool blanket using three balls and a dryer of t-shirts and undies using 3 balls. Both dryers on low. The t-shirts load was 95% dry. Typically, I’d do a 76 min dry on shirts and others loads and this mostly did it in half the time. My only real “complaint” is that I put 10 drops on essential oil on the balls immediately before drying and my clothes didn’t smell like lavender =/ womp womp. Whatever. I’m still happy to have gotten these. I stopped using dryer sheets years ago because I thought it a waste of money before I thought about the environmental impact. Now that I’m more eco-conscious, I’m glad I got these because they are not only helping cut energy use but they’re cutting back on static AND I’m not wasting any money. Big thumbs up. Highly recommend.

I toss just three balls in the dryer with my clothes and it did speed up the drying process. I use a hybrid method so I only put my clothes in the dryer for a few minutes and then hang it so it can finish drying but once I started using the dryer balls there’s only a few pieces of clothing that still need to be hanged to dry.
