Nothing feels better than fresh, clean laundry. But what if the products youβre using are actually dirty? Most conventional laundry detergents are hiding irritating ingredients masked by the cover-all word, βfragranceβ. Likewise, while dryer sheets can help clothes stay soft and fresh-smelling, they typically contain toxic chemicals, that cling to fabric and vent into the air we breathe. Plus, being single-use is hardly a green choice!
Eco Nuts laundry products are revolutionizing the way we think about laundry. They are dedicated to creating products with high quality ingredients that are effective, eco-friendly, and ethically-sourced. There are no harsh odors, harmful chemicals, or fake fillers, so you can rest assured that the articles closest to your body are truly clean and safe. This also means there are no destructive ingredients washing down the drain either. Plus, their packaging is thoughtfully made with sustainable, easy-to-recycle materials, like cardboard and aluminum. No plastic!
Check out their wild-grown, Certified Organic soap berries for a gentle and safe alternative to conventional detergent. Their Dryer Balls are made from cruelty-free New Zealand wool and provide a non-toxic, sustainable solution to harmful dryer sheets, softening clothing, lowering static, and reducing drying time!

I love using a natural product that produces no waste. My laundry is fresh and clean, and I was fairly skeptical with two athletic teenage boys. Lots of sweaty workout clothes in my house and they come out odorless.

How would these be used when washing clothes by hand?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi Jamie! To wash clothes by hand, we recommend Soak 3-4 soap nuts in warm water for an hour. Then squeeze the soap nuts to release the saponin, remove the soap nuts and soak the clothes to be washed in that soap nut water for 15-20 minutes!

I love how many more washes I can get from soap nuts than regular detergent. There is no smell or soapy feeling after washing. These are even organic, and I love that. These actually do soap up, which I wasn’t sure if they would when I purchased these. The two bags they come with to throw the soap nuts into have held up several washes. I really don’t think I’ll ever use commercial laundry detergent ever again.

I have been very impressed so far. My clothes are coming out as clean as my previous eco friendly detergent from blueland (at 1/3 of the price per load). I do not normally use fabric softener, and my clothes are noticeably softer after a couple of uses. These are also great for my young children who seem to have sensitive skin, I use this instead of baby detergent. I also like that these are harvested sustainably and a fair wage is given to employees. If I HAD to find a negative it would be that sometimes I accidentally throw the pouch in the dryer with the laundry and have to find it, but thatβs really it.

We love washing with just the soap nuts. It does a great job, is really affordable, doesn’t leave a soapy residue on the clothes like all other detergents, and we can compost them afterwards! It does seem magical to wash your clothes with what appears not to be detergent and they come out not stinking. But it works. They’re not great for really dirty things (stains), but you can keep some back up detergent for that. For the plastic saved, this is worth it and seems cost effective too.

As a member of a family of seven, an environmentally conscious option is always something to look for. I am very happy with the soap nuts. For smaller loads we have noticed it works better. When laundry is done they also have to dry (the freshly sudds nuts) which is something others may have to plan ahead. We love the soap nuts overall and for more sensitive pieces. For us with laundry that needs a dep cleaning we go to a stronger alternative. I love that this product is easy to take to travel (pre-COVID) and that it pays for itself with all the loads given that with typically detergent you are paying for the plastic container and 95% water. Excellent for college students too!!

I used this for a load of laundry in warm water and I gave my clothes a good sniff and they all smelled clean after the wash and the dryer.
I also used them to wash a dirty bathroom mat and some kitchen rags. The mat came out fluffy and soft and clean and smelled fine, but the more set in stains did not come out. Same with the rags. These were done with warm water.
I think these work fine but I think other products are needed for extra power if you’re dealing with set in stains. I’m happy with the product although I also am hesitant about getting stuff shipped from Nepal to the US. That being said, they’re such a light product I don’t think they have a huge carbon footprint. While I doubt it would be sustainable if the whole world switched to soapberries, I think in conjunction with other eco friendly alternative to laundry, they’re pretty excellent.

How do I know when it’s time to replace and use new nuts?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero –
Hi! Each soap nut should be able to be used up to 10 times before they no longer contain saponin, the naturally occurring cleansing agent. Once the nuts begin to crumble and break apart, youβll know itβs time to refresh the bag with new ones! Also, not only are these nuts wild-grown and pesticide-free, but theyβre compostable at the end of life!

How eco-friendly is this if it ships from Nepal? I also am not a fan of how well it cleans. My daughter turned me on to these. I’ve tried several brands and these are the best. The little bag, however, was not enough for me. So those of you out there who feel the same, here’s what I did. Found a small, green, round device at the dollar store (used to store mothballs) and had my husband drill small holes all round it. It snaps on VERY tight, and contains the nuts beautifully during washing. The holes allow all the lovely cleaning stuff to do their thing. I do activitate them first in hot tap water in a bowl by shaking them in the water, and discovered that they will even suds up in cold water when I “agitate” them. What’s not to love?!

I wish I had the results these 5-star reviewers had, but I just didnβt, sadly. We have animals and must just be stinky people β coming out of the wash, our shirts smelled like sweat and looked dingy, and our cleaning rags would smell like whatever product was last used on them. Cleaning pet messes, I would rather not worry that the animals can still smell past soilings on the towels and things.
I refuse to wash all my laundry with warm water, but maybe it would work better than cold water if youβre into that. It does noticeably soften the fabrics, though.

First off these hardly bubble up even in boiling water. Second the water they made after boiling was sticky. Third they stink when boiled. Overall I gave them a try because I really want to be zero waste, but there is nothing that makes these good for cleaning. If you are considering these, save yourself the money and just wash your laundry with water pretreating messes with bar soap, otherwise stick to your regular eco detergent.

Hi! I recently bought a large cotton bag of soap nuts from a different company, and inside the cotton bag was a plastic liner. Super disappointing. I’m hoping there isn’t an inner plastic bag in your product?

This is a great and affordable alternative to traditional laundry detergent. It is easier to use, and cleans my clothes quite well. I have been using these for a couple weeks now, and more than satisfied with this product. However you have to use warm water with these in order to use them properly.

Question
Kristi Hayner –
Are these seedless?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero (verified owner) –
Hi Kristi – the pit of these berries has been removed! Plus, each box of soap nuts comes with a small organic cotton bag in which to put the berries. This helps ensure that soap touches (and cleans!) your clothing, but the berries stay protected and in-tact. π

I was slightly skeptical coming in to this, but after fair judgement time, I’m in LOVE! Actually, after the first wash I called my mom AND my best friends, to gush about how they totally surpassed my expectations. From a family of 5, with 3 kids under 6, I highly reccomend!

Question
Sabine –
Are the people who harvest the nuts in Nepal paid fair? And how many nuts can be harvested per tree? I mean is this a sustainable alternative? Or are we taking products away from people who need them too? I am really curious to understand this concept.

EarthHero (verified owner) –
Hi Sabine! Great questions all around. Eco-Nuts is a wonderful company with extremely high ethical and environmental standards. The soap nuts are wild-harvested once a year by workers who are paid Fair Trade wages and in environments that Eco-Nuts ensures are safe and equitable. The soap nuts are never treated with pesticides or fertilizers, which is not only great for the Earth and the consumer, but also for those doing the picking!

Question
Jennifer Askew –
will these work in cold water? I read some where that they recommend you use hot water when using this type of soap.

EarthHero (verified owner) –
Hi Jennifer! We love washing with cold water since it’s typically better for the planet (uses less energy) and better for your clothing! However, very cold water can inhibit the soap nuts from releasing their cleaning agent, saponin. To combat this, it’s suggested that one makes a βteaβ by placing the bag with the nuts into a cup of hot water and letting it sit up to 10 minutes, and then adding both the water and bag directly into the drum of the machine. This does take time, so an alternative is the Eco-Nuts Liquid Detergent, which is formulated to work in a wider range of water conditions.

I feel like that moment in “Tangled” when Rapunzel is screaming that she is never going back to her tower. These eco nuts are amazing! I personally have noticed that they work so much better at removing dirt, stains, and build-up and I was SO skeptical before trying them. I’m so hapy they are natural and compostable and won’t cause build-up in pipes or the laundry machine. I also love that something natural actually WORKS. I want to scream and tell everyone about these!

Question
Alejandra –
If my laundry machine has 16kg of capacity, how many nuts should I use for a full load?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
EarthHero (verified owner) –
Hi Alejandra! Adding 4-5 soap nuts to the provided bag should still do the trick! It’s less a matter of the size of your washing machine and more about how large a load you’re washing. π
