A sustainable laundry experience that's nuts (literally!) Eco Nuts Soap Nuts are actually dried berries from trees in the Himalayas, that when agitated in water, release a natural cleansing agent called saponin–which also acts as a fabric softener. USDA Certified and completely free of chemicals or additives, this natural laundry detergent is great for sensitive skin, but still leaves clothes fresh and clean. To use: simply place 4-5 soap nuts in the provided cloth bag and toss it in the washeRead Morer! Berries can be reused up to 10 times.

About the Company

Eco Nuts

Nothing feels better than fresh, clean laundry. But what if the products you’re using are actually dirty? Most conventional laundry detergents are hiding irritating ingredients masked by the cover-all word, “fragrance”. Likewise, while dryer sheets can help clothes stay soft and fresh-smelling, they typically contain toxic chemicals, that cling to fabric and vent into the air we breathe. Plus, being single-use is hardly a green choice!
Eco Nuts laundry products are revolutionizing the way we think about laundry. They are dedicated to creating products with high quality ingredients that are effective, eco-friendly, and ethically-sourced. There are no harsh odors, harmful chemicals, or fake fillers, so you can rest assured that the articles closest to your body are truly clean and safe. This also means there are no destructive ingredients washing down the drain either. Plus, their packaging is thoughtfully made with sustainable, easy-to-recycle materials, like cardboard and aluminum. No plastic!

Check out their wild-grown, Certified Organic soap berries for a gentle and safe alternative to conventional detergent. Their Dryer Balls are made from cruelty-free New Zealand wool and provide a non-toxic, sustainable solution to harmful dryer sheets, softening clothing, lowering static, and reducing drying time!

Used once so far, and works fine. Internet offers conflicting instructions on how many nuts to use & how long they will last, so this probably won’t actually last 100 loads. Of course, I’ll update this review if the nuts in fact do last me about 100 loads.

    Amazing

Let me tell you about these nuts… Holy cow these are amazing. I now exclusively use soap nuts for washing my laundry. These get all clothes entirely clean, they remove all sweaty smell, and get rid of dirt. The nuts don’t have any scent themselves, so they leave your clothes smelling neutral. A definite switch I would encourage!

    Works AMAZINGLY🤩

    bellak20032018 (verified owner)

So far this product has worked AMAZINGLY for me. I’m an athlete who soaks clothing in sweat between cross country and dance. All of my clothes has come out smelling clean, granted no actual scent, but I don’t like my clothes smelling like detergent anyways. They just smell plain and renewed when they come out of the washer. No problems so far.😊

    Love these!

    liscart2012 (verified owner)

I honestly find them very useful to get my clothes rid of odors and small stains! I think they’re just adorable too. After they are wet they smell a little of vinegar and they dry quickly for the next reuse. I don’t plan to switch back to using liquid detergent at all. I’ll be using these and a natural powdered mixture too if I’m out of these. 🙂 Thanks Earthhero!

Works good enough for most things

    kajalpatelbelow (verified owner)

It does seem magical to wash your clothes with what appears not to be detergent and they come out not stinking. But it works. They’re not great for really dirty things (stains), but you can keep some back up detergent for that. For the plastic saved, this is worth it and seems cost effective too.

Good for smaller loads- family of seven

    asvjupiter107 (verified owner)

As a member of a family of seven, an environmentally conscious option is always something to look for. I am very happy with the soap nuts. For smaller loads we have noticed it works better. When laundry is done they also have to dry (the freshly sudds nuts) which is something others may have to plan ahead. We love the soap nuts overall and for more sensitive pieces. For us with laundry that needs a dep cleaning we go to a stronger alternative. I love that this product is easy to take to travel (pre-COVID) and that it pays for itself with all the loads given that with typically detergent you are paying for the plastic container and 95% water. Excellent for college students too!!

Pretty good, no stain lifting power though

    samicat13 (verified owner)

I used this for a load of laundry in warm water and I gave my clothes a good sniff and they all smelled clean after the wash and the dryer.
I also used them to wash a dirty bathroom mat and some kitchen rags. The mat came out fluffy and soft and clean and smelled fine, but the more set in stains did not come out. Same with the rags. These were done with warm water.
I think these work fine but I think other products are needed for extra power if you’re dealing with set in stains. I’m happy with the product although I also am hesitant about getting stuff shipped from Nepal to the US. That being said, they’re such a light product I don’t think they have a huge carbon footprint. While I doubt it would be sustainable if the whole world switched to soapberries, I think in conjunction with other eco friendly alternative to laundry, they’re pretty excellent.

This product is phenomenal! I love how everything I own feels and looks clean. It also got the musty odor out of blankets sitting in my closet from last apartment. It doesn’t leave my clothes smelling like anything which is good, as fragrances that linger tend to give me a headache. I tried a laundry ball and didn’t feel that the ball worked but this did and I love it.

Hi! Each soap nut should be able to be used up to 10 times before they no longer contain saponin, the naturally occurring cleansing agent. Once the nuts begin to crumble and break apart, you’ll know it’s time to refresh the bag with new ones! Also, not only are these nuts wild-grown and pesticide-free, but they’re compostable at the end of life!

I would say that Soap Nuts are sufficient for regular laundry, but I found that they didn’t clean completely for more soiled items (muddy after extended backpacking). For reference, I used cold water only, not sure if that has an effect on efficacy. A good choice if you don’t often have clothes that need a deep clean!

How eco-friendly is this if it ships from Nepal? I also am not a fan of how well it cleans. It requires warm water to activate the “soap” but was water requires more electricity than tap cold does (at least where I live). Very little waste package, sure. But not exactly eco-friendly. (Of course it’s better than a gallon of Tide though!)

Hi there! The soapberry trees that soap nuts come from are grown in Asia and other tropical climates! We love to use soap nuts in many temperatures of water- cold will work well as long as there is enough agitation in the basin to draw out the suds 🙂

    Love them!

    Cynthia Jones

My daughter turned me on to these. I’ve tried several brands and these are the best. The little bag, however, was not enough for me. So those of you out there who feel the same, here’s what I did. Found a small, green, round device at the dollar store (used to store mothballs) and had my husband drill small holes all round it. It snaps on VERY tight, and contains the nuts beautifully during washing. The holes allow all the lovely cleaning stuff to do their thing. I do activitate them first in hot tap water in a bowl by shaking them in the water, and discovered that they will even suds up in cold water when I “agitate” them. What’s not to love?!

I wish I had the results these 5-star reviewers had, but I just didn’t, sadly. We have animals and must just be stinky people — coming out of the wash, our shirts smelled like sweat and looked dingy, and our cleaning rags would smell like whatever product was last used on them. Cleaning pet messes, I would rather not worry that the animals can still smell past soilings on the towels and things.

I refuse to wash all my laundry with warm water, but maybe it would work better than cold water if you’re into that. It does noticeably soften the fabrics, though.

Soap nuts clean well but flimsy cloth bag

    vylept (verified owner)

The soap nuts work well in my washes and there’s no artificial perfume/smell on my clothes once done. The clothes, I feel, do come out softer than when I used Tide pod before. However, the cloth bag is kinda flimsy even after just the first wash that threads become loose. I suppose it may disintegrate quickly after many washes but hopefully if I try to stitch it up, it will reinforce the seams.

If it's too good to be true, it is.

    Shelby (verified owner)

First off these hardly bubble up even in boiling water. Second the water they made after boiling was sticky. Third they stink when boiled. Overall I gave them a try because I really want to be zero waste, but there is nothing that makes these good for cleaning. If you are considering these, save yourself the money and just wash your laundry with water pretreating messes with bar soap, otherwise stick to your regular eco detergent.

Hi, Shelby! Thank you for your review of these Eco Nuts! Many people in our office love this zero waste option- let me pass along some tips they shared with me! No alarm necessary- these berries are naturally low-suds, so they won’t suds as much as a typical laundry detergent! Additionally, many people find that washing with warm or even cold water helps these nuts work their best- no boiling water needed! I hope this helps! I also just sent you an email to follow up- keep your eye out for that! 🙂

Hi, Nora! Great question! Soap nuts are great for removing stains! I would even try their liquid detergent if you’re super worried about stains because it contains organic alcohol to help remove oil and grime! Additionally, you could pair either detergent with one of our stain sticks to really tackle those tough ones 🙂

I bought the large box, 360 loads, back in June and have about 1/3 of the box left I think. Odds are very good I get them again. Pro-tip: I keep a dry erase marker with a magnet on the lid on the washer so I can mark each time I use a load of 4-5 nuts and keep track of my use. I used to not remember how many times I used them and probably got rid of them too early at times.

Hello Ben! Each load requires about 4-5 berries (to be placed in the included cotton bag) and these may be used up to 10 times. Once they appear dull and a little broken, you’ll know it’s time to toss them in the compost and add in fresh berries. 🙂

Are the people who harvest the nuts in Nepal paid fair? And how many nuts can be harvested per tree? I mean is this a sustainable alternative? Or are we taking products away from people who need them too? I am really curious to understand this concept.

Hi Sabine! Great questions all around. Eco-Nuts is a wonderful company with extremely high ethical and environmental standards. The soap nuts are wild-harvested once a year by workers who are paid Fair Trade wages and in environments that Eco-Nuts ensures are safe and equitable. The soap nuts are never treated with pesticides or fertilizers, which is not only great for the Earth and the consumer, but also for those doing the picking!

    • EarthHero

      Admin EarthHero (verified owner)

Hi Jennifer! We love washing with cold water since it’s typically better for the planet (uses less energy) and better for your clothing! However, very cold water can inhibit the soap nuts from releasing their cleaning agent, saponin. To combat this, it’s suggested that one makes a “tea” by placing the bag with the nuts into a cup of hot water and letting it sit up to 10 minutes, and then adding both the water and bag directly into the drum of the machine. This does take time, so an alternative is the Eco-Nuts Liquid Detergent, which is formulated to work in a wider range of water conditions.

I personally have noticed that they work so much better at removing dirt, stains, and build-up and I was SO skeptical before trying them. I’m so hapy they are natural and compostable and won’t cause build-up in pipes or the laundry machine. I also love that something natural actually WORKS. I want to scream and tell everyone about these!
