Wool

Wool is a natural and renewable resource that can be harvested annually from sheep. Sheep are relatively low impact animals, but can overgraze land if not raised properly. Wool production can also be insecticide and water intensive, but the finished yarn is absorbent and requires little dye during processing. Untreated wool is biodegradable.

Handmade

We support small businesses and craftspeople who create each of their products with care. Handmade products are generally produced on a small scale, without the use of large energy consuming factories and production facilities. Buying handmade helps support art, communities, and people’s livelihoods.

Recycled Packaging

This product is packaged or shipped in materials that contain recycled content.

Low Impact Dyes

Companies can adopt multiple practices to dye their textiles and products in a more environmentally safe way. Low impact dyes usually do not contain toxins such as heavy metals, plasticizers, fluorocarbons, and formaldehyde. Sustainable dyes can also be water or plant based, or use less water than conventional dyeing methods.

About the Company

Kyrgies

Have you ever thought about where your footwear comes from? How the materials were made and the people behind the label who work to construct the shoes? The guys at Kyrgies certainly have. From field to foot, the founders of Kyrgies have sustainability and direct community impact built into everything they do. Steve Anderson and Barclay Saul don’t only talk the talk when it comes to transparency in the supply chain, they walk the walk - literally! Their ethical slipper collection starts with a tradition that is over 1,000 years old - Kyrgyz felting. The slippers are produced in Bishkek, Kyrgystan, where wet felting with local sheep's wool has been a staple craft for centuries. Workers and families pass this skill on from one generation to the next and these slippers are one way they celebrate wool and preserve cultural heritage.

    Feel good purchase

I love that these are from Kyrgyzstan, providing environmentally sustainable employment for local workers. And I love how warm they are. They are shorter and wider than US sizing. I am a woman size 8 normally, but my toes touch the tip of the 8.5/9 slippers, and socks are needed to keep them on my feet due to the width. That said they are comfy, warm, and authentic. Just size up and choose another slipper if you have narrow feet.

    Comfy, but size up

I was excited to try these because they check a lot of boxes for things I wanted in a new pair of slippers. I typically wear a women’s 8.5, but have a long narrow foot so sometimes 9 is more appropriate. I ordered the women’s 8.5-9/men’s 6.5-7, which was stamped with euro 39.

My toes were at the end so I ordered the next size up but kept the original pair (giving to a friend with smaller feet). There’s barely a difference in size between the 39s and 40s. Holding them next to each other, they look nearly identical.

My toes also touched the end of that pair, but I decided to keep them and see if they stretch. I have been wearing them pretty consistently through the day while at my work from home standing desk. I don’t notice my toes touching the ends as much so I think they are stretching/breaking in.

These aren’t plush, cushioned slippers and they don’t have a lot of support so I would recommend something else if that’s what you want. However, if you want warm slippers that don’t make your feet sweat, these are a good option. I also like that the suede sole is not loud on floors like some other slipper soles (and isn’t slippery so far).

    run small

The slippers are really nicely made, but I was disappointed that they were too small. They are marked with European size numbers, but the website does not indicate that. If I had known the European size, I would have ordered the next size up. Earthhero could not process a simple exchange, so I will have to order the next size up.
