Paraben Free

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalate Free

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Sulfate Free

Sulfates are synthetic chemical ingredients commonly used in beauty products and household cleaners, like shampoos and dish soaps. You can usually identify sulfates in an ingredients list by looking out for the most common types: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLC) and Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLES). These chemicals, often derived from petroleum, are used to help form the “lather” we’re used to seeing in our beauty and cleaning products. When used in the shower or sink, these chemicals can flow through the pipes and into our waterways. Synthetic sulfates have been linked to allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and hair loss, and some studies suggest they contain carcinogenic ingredients.

Organic Content

Organic materials and ingredients are grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, farm workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship. Choosing organic materials eliminates the use of insecticides and other harmful chemicals, promotes efficient resource use, and results in a safer products and a cleaner planet!

I was having trouble with dandruff. I tried many different shampoos. This is the only one that has helped me get rid of it and keep my hair feeling healthy.

I absolutely love how this bar makes my hair feel. Ever since I’ve started using it, it’s like life was put back in my hair. Not to mention, it doesn’t strip the color from my hair as quickly as my last shampoo, my purple hair likey. Very cost effective and works great, plus it doesn’t leave behind a scent which is perfect because I’m allergic to fragrances. I usually add a little bit of a homemade jojoba and Rosewater blend on the ends when it’s dry. Seems to do the trick. Absolutely wonderful.

Excellent Zero-waste swap! Remember to use Apple cider vinegar rinse to eliminate the waxy/sticky feeling!

    kerrywarrywantabeary (verified owner)

With quarantine inspiring me to commit to a more zero-waste lifestyle, I looked into shampoo bars. I have had a poor experience years before with shampoo bars and emailed the owner/creator of Plum Brilliance to ask how to properly use (and what bar she recommended for me) a shampoo bar to prevent my fine, curly, ginger hair from getting sticky/tangled with residue. She told me to do a good lather, and you don’t need to rub the damp bar much into your hair near your scalp to get an excellent lather, then to rinse well (I can’t run my fingers through my hair in this step, so I just massage my hair under the running water to the best of my ability), and then to do an apple cider vinegar rinse all over, especially for my scalp (I use Bragg’s with the Mother, about 2 ounces of ACV with 6 ounces of water- I have a hair-applicator bottle for this step, and I add a few drops of organic essential oils to semi-mask the smell of the ACV when I’m in the shower since you don’t smell the ACV when your hair is fully dried). The apple cider vinegar rinse is what helps to detangle my hair, balance my scalp pH (so I have less oil and general “build-up” on my scalp, and thus I feel cleaner between hair-washing days), and it actually hydrates my hair too! To a decent extent, at least, since on my in-between days where I don’t wash, I just rinse with water and occasionally add 100% argan oil to my ends for a little hydration before I use my home-made single-ingredient flaxseed hair gel.
So, that is essentially my new hair routine and I don’t need to buy Terressentials clay-based hair wash anymore (no more plastic bottles to recycle every 3-4 months!). I love that this hair wash bar is guaranteed to last for 6 months or more, especially if you only use it once every 4-5 days like I do (oh, and use a draining soap holder, away from pools of water, or even a shower caddy out of the way of the shower water to make sure it lasts as long as possible). And it’ll save me a good chunk of change considering it cost me almost $40 for one 16 ounce bottle of Terressentials Lavender Guarden hair wash (including shipping)! Need I mention the bar smells lovely? It doesn’t leave much of any smell in your hair, especially if you follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse… Just plain hair smell (well, I have a little lavender & sandalwood essential oil smell from my home made hair gel and what I added to the ACV rinse), which is PERFECT if you are sensitive to strong or perfume-y/synthetic/chemical-y smells, like me… XD I hope all these details will help others with deciding whether they want to use a shampoo/hair wash bar for their zero-waste, plastic-reducing journey. : )

Personally it did not work for me. It left my hair feeling dry and waxy. My husband however loves it since he has shorter hair and can wash it out much easier. I would recommend using conditioner with this bar.

  7. Question

    Erin W.

How long does the shampoo bar last?

      EarthHero

Hi Erin! Since this shampoo bar is waterless, it’s super concentrated and should last a very long time! If allowed to properly dry between uses, you’re looking at around 3-4 months of solid use. However, the exact amount of time is dependent on how much hair you have and how often you like to wash it. 🙂

    What's not to like?

    Heath (verified owner)

It smells good, comes with minimal eco-friendly packaging, and lathers up very easily. My hair is squeaky clean with this bar. It’s my first time using a shampoo bar but I don’t see why I would ever go back to plastic bottles.
