Paraben Free
Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.
Phthalate Free
Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.
Sulfate Free
Sulfates are synthetic chemical ingredients commonly used in beauty products and household cleaners, like shampoos and dish soaps. You can usually identify sulfates in an ingredients list by looking out for the most common types: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLC) and Sodium Laureth Sulfates (SLES). These chemicals, often derived from petroleum, are used to help form the “lather” we’re used to seeing in our beauty and cleaning products. When used in the shower or sink, these chemicals can flow through the pipes and into our waterways. Synthetic sulfates have been linked to allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and hair loss, and some studies suggest they contain carcinogenic ingredients.

I love the HiBar shampoos. I’ve tried the orange one before (can’t remember the name, sorry!) and this one is great too! Hard to choose a favorite. I have very fine, very straight hair, and this shampoo (& the conditioner) leaves it feeling clean and silky without any gunk. I’ve tried other shampoo bars and had issues, but this one got me back on track!

I really like this product. My only complaint is that you have to make sure it dries inbetween uses or it gets slimy.

I just love this shampoo. I am completely new to bar shampoos and expected a rocky transition to them, having my whole life used shampoo out of a bottle, but this shampoo is excellent, not heavily scented, and a win for Mother Earth! what a great item this company has made!

This bar seems to work well so far. It does not always lather up as much as I’d like, but it does so more than some shampoo bars might. I like the smell, but don’t LOVE it. (I have other scents that I prefer.) My hair does seem dry right now, but I’ve been alternating between this and a medicated shampoo, so it is likely not the fault of the bar. The shape is cute too – still waiting to reserve judgment on how convenient it feels long term.

HiBar shampoo and conditioners are excellent products. They leave my hair clean and manageable. I bought them initially to reduce the amount of products in plastic containers I use. But aside from the environmental advantage, the products work really well.

I was a frequent Pantene user and then switched to this shampoo. It lathers just about the same without feeling sticky. My hair was much less frizzy after the first wash and squeaky clean (albeit a little bit dry. I have yet to use it with the conditioner).

It was my second time buying a shampoo bar and I was looking to try other ones that were out in the market. I came across this one and ended up really liking it more than the Ethique shampoo bar. It lathered way better and faster and the smell is pleasant but not overbearing which I enjoy. I normally have an oily scalp but this helped one while not drying my scalp. It lasted me for over half a year. Overall I would totally recommend this to anyone who wants to move to plastic-free shampoo.

If you don’t enjoy using a conditioner bar, this is an amazing alternative!! I enjoy using this product a lot.

I liked it. I just need to show the kids how to use it now. It takes a bit to lather; the instructions say put directly on your hair…but I’m going to try doing it my hands first, which others say works well. I’ve used it only once, but so far am happy with it. I wish I had tried it sooner before wasting so much plastic. Also, if the color is turning you off (b/c it seems bright and dyed in the photo), it’s much softer in person.

I LOVE my Maintain hibar shampoo bar. It is literally the best shampoo bar that I’ve tried and I love that the packaging is plastic free.

This is the first shampoo bar I’ve tried, but I’m loving it so far! It does take a little bit of time to get enough soap to clean my entire scalp, but it doesn’t bother me that much. It has an extremely pleasant scent and leaves my hair feeling very clean. Plus, it’s so much more compact than a shampoo bottle and I obviously love the fact that it’s plastic-free!

Question
Erin –
Does this shampoo bar work with hard water? I tried one from Package Free Shop, and it left my hair feeling oily and grimy – they told me it was because it doesn’t work well with hard water unless you do a citric acid rinse.

I have been using my HiBar since January when I first ordered it. This was my first one is almost done, I have purchased this green one and I think the results I get are still the same as the blue HiBar. For my hair type, I don’t need to wash it so frequently, which is why it has lasted this long. Both bars do a great job cleaning my hair and this green shampoo bar smells like lemons which I love! Believe it when you hear that these shampoo bars lasts, because the really do.

how long does it last for? I need something that will last for a long time.

Hi there! HiBAR shampoos typically last at least as long as a standard bottle shampoo, often longer! This is because all the goodness is concentrated inside the bar and you add the water, it’s not mixed in the container like a bottled shampoo 🙂 Just one of the reasons we love them!

Question
zenbudo –
Is there a version of this shampoo bar for dandruff?

EarthHero –
Hi there! While there isn’t a HiBAR made specifically for dandruff, All HiBARS shampoos are made from a gentle surfactant that is less drying to your skin, making them great for dry, itchy scalps! We also love this Aloe and Tea Tree shampoo bar 🙂

I love this shampoo bar! It took several uses to realize that I didn’t need to use much as the lather is amazing! My hair is very clean and doesn’t get oily like it used to!
