How to Have an Eco-friendly Halloween

Halloween (and October for that matter) is a wonderful time filled with sugary candy, apple cider, and nostalgic movies. Whether you’re planning on hosting a small get-together, staying at home and binging spooky flicks, or going door-to-door for candy, we’ve got some tips for your eco-friendly Halloween.

As a bonus, read on to the end for a costume suggestion, featuring some of our favorite sustainable products!

Low Waste Decor

Pumpkin Picking

Pumpkins decorated and put on a table for Halloween

If you’re looking to add a little color to your front porch or apartment window, what better way than with a good ol’ pumpkin. See if there’s a pumpkin patch near where you live and check it out with friends. And if there isn’t one near you, your local supermarket will surely have some in stock. It might even be worthwhile to get one you’re later able to clean out and bake with so you get double the use out of your orange gourd. Pro tip: to minimize waste, skip the carving and go straight for creative decoration with lace, leftover fabric scraps, and food coloring.

Milk jug ghost faces for Halloween

Ghoul Milk Jars

If you drink milk from plastic jugs, instead of recycling them (at least for now), you can decorate them into little ghosts. Use a black marker, colorful threads, and non-toxic paint to make them beautiful. Moreover, you can even stick a tea light inside for an added layer of spookiness. Just be sure you don’t put an open flame inside because it will inevitably melt the plastic.

Shop Secondhand

Easy DIY Halloween Yarn Spider Web

If there’s a decor you’re dying to have (no pun intended), you can always ask to borrow a friends’ or shop secondhand. Many thrift stores will have Halloween items on display in October (although many more items come about after Halloween), so you might be in luck. If you’re looking for inspiration, Pinterest is a great resource. Maybe add a skeleton to your patio chair, some eco-friendly Halloween spider webs to your mailbox, or make a tombstone with an old cardboard box and art supplies. When in doubt, thrift it out!
