SOKO

For something to be beautiful, the system that created it must also be beautiful.

SOKO is the story of ambitious women making a difference in the world. SOKO is a women-led, eco-conscious brand that connects talented artisans in Kenya with the global market for fine jewelry. Through the power of business, SOKO gives makers a safe and fair opportunity to share their talent with the world and access a brighter future for themselves and their families.

The artisan-craft sector is one of the largest employers in the developing world. However, when sales are siloed within a small community, it becomes one of the most marginalized industries. Eager to increase access and connect makers to a global market, SOKO has dedicated themselves to inspiring, empowering, and supporting otherwise disadvantaged communities. SOKO's mission is to support artisans, especially women of color, to build their own business and find financial independence. In the effort to create a true sustainable difference in the lives of their partners, SOKO caps their work requests at 50% or less of an artisan's total capacity. This ensures each creator has agency and is never solely reliant on SOKO.

Within their production process, SOKO prioritizes three concerns; Muda (waste), Muri (overburden), and Mura (unevenness). Through the commitment to balancing these standards, SOKO creates a business model that is efficient, ethical, and eco-minded.

Style driven by a greater social purpose

There are so many reasons to love SOKO, from their beautiful designs and quality craftsmanship to their mission of improving global social equity. On top of all that, SOKO has admirable sustainable initiatives that minimize their environmental impact, something that is a rare find in the jewelry industry. As a Certified B Corp, SOKO is committed to helping everyone reach a more equitable world, one beautiful necklace, bracelet, or ring at a time. On top of helping Kenyan artisans reach a global audience, SOKO's virtual factory also reduces their carbon impact by creating a platform for developing and sharing designs with zero-waste. The SOKO offices are built near the artisan workshops to limit travel emissions and many of the materials used are either handmade, recycled, and sourced locally. Even the jewelry tags are made from 100% recycled paper! The presence of sustainable initiatives rippling through every aspect of their business model shows that SOKO considers the environmental impact of their brand in a truly holistic way. The artisans that craft SOKO jewelry recycle as much as possible, with 70% of all products currently made from upcycled materials. The fragments of reclaimed horn and bone are ethically gathered from local butchers while any ceramic beads are handmade by a Fair Trade Women's collective called Kazuri. Metal materials are bought from local vendors and markets, and transformed by artisans into sleek, modern jewelry. With a base material of recycled brass, artisans use an electroplating process to create gold and chrome plated designs. Their electroplating process already recycles 60% of the water used, and SOKO is still aiming for more! The brand is working towards a system that utilizes 75% recycled water and encourages an overall reduction in water consumption. Already a leader in ethically manufacturing, SOKO is always looking for more ways to innovate and support the planet.
