SOL Organics

Change you Can Sleep On

Who They Are

Founded in Minneapolis by two friends with a passion for sustainable fibers, SOL Organics set out to revolutionize the luxury sheet industry. To get their designs perfect, co-founder Vishal Naithani went to high end retailers nationwide, purchased luxury sheets, and sent them off to an international textile lab to be deconstructed to determine thread count, weave, and construction elements. They found that many companies used conventional cotton with falsely inflated thread counts and harmful environmental effects. They felt that there had to be a better way!

So they researched, and then researched some more, searching the Organic Textile database while contacting hundreds of factories, looking for the perfect supplier that checked all the boxes. Eventually, they found their perfect factory and SOL Organics was born. Today, SOL produces luxury organic sheets using high quality long-staple organic cotton to produce the coziest sheets, at affordable prices.

Why We Like Them

From seed to sheet, SOL Organics brings transparency into each aspect of producing their award winning sheets. Using GOTS Certified organic cotton, sticking to Fair Trade standards, and donating portions of their profits makes them a well-rounded company focusing on sustainability in all aspects.

Their seeds starts it all. They plant natural, untreated, non-GMO seeds for their cotton. By using a crop rotation system, their farmland retains its nutrients and moisture easier, with nature as its guide. As the cotton grows, only natural fertilizer is used, with rain-fed irrigation water to preserve drinking water. By using 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, they help maintain the farmland for years to come, without the use of synthetic agricultural fertilizers or pesticides. Less water is used due to increased organic soil content, reducing the overall impact the cotton industry has on our resources. Not only does this lead to a healthier farming community, but is why SOL Organics sheets are soft, long-lasting, and cozier than your traditional cotton sheets.

When it’s time to harvest, all cotton plants are harvested naturally, by farmers treated with fair wages and safe working conditions. In addition to their Fair Trade standards and FLO-certified factories, they strictly prohibit child labor, an epidemic in the conventional textiles industry. By dedicating funds towards schools near SOL factories, they hope to encourage children to stay in school. Plus, with every purchase they donate $7.50 towards four charities: Children’s Defense Fund, water4, Hope for Justice, and The Fund for Animals.

“Luxury” doesn’t have to mean expensive with SOL Organics Fair Price Model. To make their products more accessible, SOL refuses to mark up prices for what it costs to ensure Fair Trade and Organic standards. The result is premium sheets that benefit our planet, and your wallet. They know that it takes more than a high thread count to make the perfect sheet, which is why they’ve done the research to make a sheet unlike any other.

We all want products that benefit the planet, but they have to be comfortable too. Because sheets get their strength from their fibers, SOL uses only long staple fibers in their sheets, as shorter fiber strands tend to stray out of weave, leading to coarser fabrics. They manufacture each long staple cotton fiber into single ply yarn, producing light, long-lasting sheets (unlike 2-3 ply yarn)! This single ply yarn is spun into a fine thread, adding ultimate softness into each sheet set. Finally, they add silky smooth sheen with their signature 100% organic cotton sateen weave.

The Global Organic Textile Standard is an international processing standard for organic fibers that covers everything from processing, packaging, and distributing organic fibers. GOTS certified products are labeled organic if they contain 95% or more certified organic fibers, and are labeled as “made with organic” if they contain at least 70% organic fibers. GOTS assures that textiles are produced with socially responsible labor and environmentally conscious manufacturing. Certified textiles must follow guidelines on chemical use, energy and water consumption, safety and living standards for employees, waste produced throughout the manufacture process, and more.

Organic cotton production uses zero chemical pesticides and fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship.
