Seed Phytonutrients

Farmer Fresh, Seed Obsessed

Who They Are

A young company with old school values.

Meet the trailblazers behind Seed Phytonutrients, a mission-driven beauty company located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. This organic care company embraces organic farming both philosophically and practically–infusing a love for the planet, and its diverse species of plants, into every bottle.

Founded by Shane Wolf back in 2017, a beauty industry veteran with deep roots in the farming community, Wolf seeks to ask a daring question: can a non-synthetic, sustainable, and effective brand improve not only a company’s bottom line, but also the health of small-scale, organic farming? Over 13 years after Wolf’s time at hair care company Aveda, he finally set out to achieve his dreams with Seed Phytonutrients–with a little help from his friends over at L’Oreal Cosmetics. He recruited Brad Farrell from L’Oreal, now the Seed Vice President of global brand marketing, plus some other co-conspirators, and they set off to revolutionize the personal care world!

Within months after their initial pitch, the folks at L’Oreal gave them the green light! Since early 2018, Seed Phytonutrients has been changing the world of beauty with their natural, sustainably packaged hair and skin care that’s unlike anything on the market. With recycled packaging–and a packet of seeds tucked into every eco-friendly bottle–Seed’s products are about more than just looking good. And there’s more to come! As founder Wolf says, “We’re not doing nearly as much as we’re going to do. We’re going to do a lot more.”

Why We Like Them

Seed Phytonutrients’ philosophy is simple: do everything with the purpose of furthering their 4 brand obsessions; promoting natural beauty, leading environmental sustainability, supporting local American independent organic farmers, and preserving seed diversity.

They believe that natural beauty means healthy living. That how you feel and what you choose to put into, and onto, your body are more important than the way you look (even though their products will make you look great!). They use plant seeds because they’re the most concentrated–providing the highest performing ingredients for use in their hair and skin care products. Plus, their seeds contain high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, free-radical fighting antioxidants, phytosterols, carotene, and Vitamins A, C, D, & E, which all come together to nourish and revitalize every follicle, pore, and inch of your skin & hair. They use a cold press and expeller method to extract oil from the seeds, without using harsh chemical solvents. While this takes more time for less oil, it maintains the integrity and purity of each seed. They return what’s left of the seed to their American farmers to turn into animal feed.

Seed knows that beauty can, and should, be sustainable–and becoming a leader in sustainable business practices has quickly become one of their obsessions. They use recycled and recyclable packaging for all of their products, and even created the first shower-friendly paper bottle from post-consumer materials. This unique bottle has 60% less plastic than traditional shampoo & conditioner bottles, and it’s recyclable at the end of life.

When you shop Seed Phytonutrients’ products, you support farmers with every purchase! Organic American farmers are the backbone of all Seed Phytonutrients’ products, they’re treated as such. Because it can take over 3 years to get a farm certified organic, farmers often lose tons of profit as they make this transition. Startup costs are high, and many farmers don’t make it, moving back to non-sustainable conventional farming. Seed support their farmers by paying 100% of their crop upfront, regardless of eventual yield. This lets the farmers reinvest in their farms, and plan for the future–furthering the status of certified organic farming.

Last, but certainly not least, come the seeds themselves! 94% of seed varieties have been lost in this century due to many factors; especially over-commercialization of farmland. Seed diversity matters because it helps plants protect themselves from pests, diseases, and climate change. Through Seed’s partnership with Hudson Valley Seed Company, they’ve combatted seed diversity be placing a packet of heirloom herb seeds inside the paper exterior of their dual-layer bottle. Whether you plant them outside, or start an indoor herb garden, these seed packets are actively encouraging much needed plant diversity for our planet

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Organic materials and ingredients are grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, promoting a healthier use of land and decreasing harmful agricultural runoff. By steering clear of toxic chemicals, farm workers experience less exposure to hazardous conditions, promoting social responsibility as well as environmental stewardship. Choosing organic materials eliminates the use of insecticides and other harmful chemicals, promotes efficient resource use, and results in a safer products and a cleaner planet!
