Seed Phytonutrients

Formula First, Sustainability Always

Who They Are

A family-run small business, with home grown roots.

Seed Phytonutrients was launched as an incubator brand within the L’Oréal group in 2018, but just after their second year, they were purchased by the family of their formulator. This family has a long history of crafting formulas in the natural beauty industry, and for Seed Phytonutrients since the brand was only a concept. You could say Seed returned to its roots! Since standing up on their own two feet as a small-but-mighty, woman-led team, Seed has dedicated themselves to formula first, and sustainability always.

Seed’s mission is to craft formulas that are more trusted than they are trendy, with minimal impact on the planet. They believe the magic lies in what's inside a formula, not just what isn't— that's why their love for seeds is always at the core of who they are. They power their high-performance hair, skin, and body care with seed oils and extracts, because seeds are where a plant's nutrients are encased, protected from environmental elements, and where they remain in their purest form. Seed Phytonutrients imagines a future where clean, trustworthy formulations and sustainable decision-making are the beauty industry’s standards, so they act as if they are.

Why We Like Them

Seed Phytonutrients’ philosophy is simple: do everything with the purpose of furthering their 4 brand obsessions; promoting natural beauty, leading environmental sustainability, supporting local American independent organic farmers, and preserving seed diversity.

Seed Phytonutrients believes that beauty can, and should be, sustainable. That’s why they commit to offsetting and reducing their carbon footprint annually, using recyclable packaging for all of their products, and partnering with Pact Collective to recycle the packaging components that you can’t recycle at home. Seed feels that it’s their responsibility to continuously improve the sustainability and recyclability of the packaging for all of their products.

In October 2021, Seed moved away from their revolutionary shower-friendly paper bottles with plastic liners in favor of a more sustainable material- aluminum! About 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in circulation today, because it has a high consumer recycling rate and it can be endlessly reprocessed and reformed without any major loss of metal quality. The recycling process for aluminum requires only about 5% of the energy required for its primary production. Also, because it’s so lightweight versus many other packaging materials, it requires minimal energy for transportation.

Last, but certainly not least, comes the seeds themselves! The seed is the most concentrated part of the plant, and an ideal choice for top quality ingredients. It’s where a plant’s nutrients are encased and protected from environmental elements, so they remain in their purest form. Seeds contain high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytosterols, carotene, and vitamins A, C, D and E. Seed Phytonutrients uses the cold press and expeller methods to extract oil from their seeds (as opposed to using chemical solvents.) These methods use mechanical pressure to release the oil. This takes more time and extracts less oil, but Seed feels it’s worth it to maintain the integrity of oils and to ensure the highest level of purity.

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.
