Why We Like Them

LEGO® + bags + environmentally friendly materials = no brainer. But seriously, this company is really shaking things up and making a difference. We love the small scale action turned to massive impact LEGO® Bags offers. Let’s look at it from a big picture stance – when customers care about the environment and start learning how they can make a difference, they demand better materials be used in their products. The more brands that make products with better materials, the less expensive these materials become, the more companies will use eco-friendly materials, and the more impact we can collectively create. Enter LEGO® Bags. These guys have the leverage of a huuuuge brand name who is listening to customer demand to create change. More and more companies will follow suit after a leader like LEGO® and this is where the magic of power to the people happens.

If we break it down even further, when LEGO® Bags avoids the use of virgin plastics in their materials (think polyester and nylon), they are preventing the extraction of new oil which is an energy, water, and fuel intensive process. Instead, they are upcycling already existing plastic, from single-use bottles, and giving new life to an item that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. To drive the point home even further, let’s look at some of the statistics: In 2017, they turned more than 1.5 million post-consumer plastic bottles into bags. In 2018, they’ll have saved more than 3 million bottles and counting, with 99 percent of their bags using recycled fabric. That incredible impact makes our hearts, our mouths, and our planet smile in unison.

Some or all of the energy used to make this product is produced via renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydropower.

Recycled PET utilizes salvaged post-industrial PET scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers. These plastics are dried, crushed, and spun into yarn in order to create recycled PET fabric, or polyester. By providing a use for recycled plastics, companies encourage recycling programs worldwide, while adding new value to discarded items. Currently, over half of virgin PET production goes towards making textiles, so by utilizing recycled PET, post-consumer materials are both diverting waste while taking the place of raw materials. This helps to reduce the demand for the extraction of oil, as well as energy used to produce new synthetic fibers.

Recycling is the process of taking an otherwise-discarded item or material and cleaning, sorting, and breaking it down into its basic form (such as fibers or pellets). This material is then used to produce new items. Recycling keeps useful materials from being discarded in landfills, prevents resource extraction due to the creation of new materials, and provides a new life for used items. Recycling can utilize both pre-consumer waste (materials left over from production) or post-consumer materials (used clothing, empty water bottles, etc). This product is made from recycled content.
