Hyggelight

Hygge Inspired. Planet Obsessed.

Who They Are

Cyndi and Chris, self-proclaimed plant hoarders, wondered what they could do with all their leftover plant pots. On a whim, they decided they wanted to try out candle-making and fill the plant pots with soy wax. When Cyndi’s friend sent her a paper seed card, she had nowhere to plant it anymore - all her plant pots were occupied with candles! That’s when Cyndi and Chris Hileman decided they were going to create a simple and cozy, zero-waste product with all-natural ingredients that could serve more than just one purpose. Thus, Hyggelight “growing candles” were born!

Hyggelight candles come with a ceramic container, filled with 100% soy wax, and embedded with a seed paper label you can use to plant wildflowers. Once the candles are all burnt out, the candle container can be repurposed into a plant pot by just adding soil and the included seed paper label. Cyndi and Chris are passionate about helping the planet and leading the reusable, “growing candle” industry into the path of sustainability.

The name of the company, Hyggelight (Hoo-Ga-Lite) was inspired by the Danish concept of Hygge, an idea close to Cyndi and Chris’ hearts. Hygge means creating a feeling or atmosphere of coziness and comfort. Combining hygge with sustainability, means zero-waste, reusable, coziness, and simplicity, all wrapped together into one product which empowers your own individual hygge and sustainable lifestyle. Imagine how comfy you’ll be when you come home to a house filled with candles and flowers!

Hyggelight, a family company, took one household item and made it into two: a candle and a plant. Infused with the idea of hygge, the reusable “growing candle” is the next essential household item. You’ll never look at candles the same way again!

Why We Like Them

Hyggelight is just as passionate about helping the planet as they are about creating a cozy home. Hyggelight makes handmade, zero-waste candles that come with a ceramic container and seed paper label. The container it comes in doubles as a plant pot once you’ve burned your last bit of wax. And the label is actually made from recycled seed paper that you’ll plant directly in the plant pot – just add soil! Not only do their products stay out of landfill, but their entire manufacturing facility only sends one household bag of trash to landfill per month! And, they’re close to eliminating manufacturing waste entirely.

The handmade candle is 100% all-natural pure soy, made with nothing that shouldn’t be there – no additives, colorants, or phthalates so you don’t get headaches from artificial smells. The cotton wicks are lead-free and the wick base is made of aluminum. So after you’re done with the candle and before you add soil, make sure to pop out the wick tab and recycle it!

Finished with the candle? Move on to stage two: clean and empty the container, soak the seed paper that contains non-GMO wildflower seeds overnight in water, fill the container 3/4th of the way with soil, and place soaked seed paper label on top of soil. Lightly cover seed paper with just about 1/8th of an inch of soil. Be sure to spray soil lightly with water twice a day, and watch your Hyggelight transform into a colorful array of flowers.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.
