HEVEA

The planet carries our fingerprint

Who They Are

Shortly after becoming a mother, Terese Hoffeldt encountered a common conundrum among new parents; was she doing everything right? And more importantly, what is “right?” While confident in her deep love for and connection to her child, she wondered if the products with which she was surrounding her were the very best. When Terese looked at what was available, everything she found was plastic - pacifiers, toys, teethers, you name it! She knew that there had to be other alternatives, ones that were safer for her child and kinder to our planet.

After immense research, Terese came across the ideal material: Natural Rubber! Durable, non-toxic, and primed to be molded into adorable shapes, its potential was endless! From there, HEVEA was born. The brand is focused on safe and eco-friendly options for babies (and puppies!) that are both effective and full of fun!

In addition to providing items that calm teething babies, make bath time exciting, and entertain new pups, HEVEA is run on a core mission of taking the guess-work out of making safe choices for little ones. The power of sustainable materials and sweet, simple Scandinavian design makes HEVEA a total parenting win!

Why We Like Them

HEVEA places enormous emphasis on creating playful products that are gentle on our planet and safe for our kiddos. Each non-toxic item, whether a puppy chew-toy or a brightly colored pacifier is made from 100% Natural Rubber and sustainably sourced from Malaysian Rubber Trees. Not only is natural rubber an excellent alternative to synthetic, petroleum-based options, it also boasts the unique ability to fully break down at the end of its life. Additionally, all of HEVEA’s packaging is also compostable!

HEVEA is passionate about waste-management and is careful not to let any materials go without use. Any packaging leftover from the manufacturing process is re-used or turned into alternative products, whether that be postcards, business cards, or in-store materials. They also offer a unique recycling program for their pacifiers, upcycling them from tired, worn-out rubber into innovative and new products!

Natural rubber is harvested by tapping the Havea tree and collecting the sap. Sustainably harvested rubber comes from forests that are carefully managed to avoid over-tapping, ensuring healthy rubber trees for the future. Some sustainable rubber tree management prohibits clear cutting to plant rubber plantations, and ensures the livelihoods of native peoples and local workers.

Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives, commonly used in beauty products like shampoo, lotion, and deodorants. Parabens can accumulate in your body, and have been linked to hormonal disruption and reproductive problems. In studies of breast cancer patients, parabens have been found in the tissue of cancerous tumors–yikes! If you want to avoid Parabens in your beauty products, keep an eye out for methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben in the ingredients list.

Phthalates are found in toys, electronics, personal care products, plastic wraps, containers, and more. These petroleum based chemicals help soften plastics, and bind fragrances to perfumes, deodorants, creams, and other personal care products. Phthalates are are not chemically bound, meaning they can easily get released into the air, water, or your body, just by using the products as intended. Phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system, which can cause reproductive damage, hormonal imbalances, infertility, mood changes, metabolism changes, and more.

Companies can adopt multiple practices to dye their textiles and products in a more environmentally safe way. Low impact dyes usually do not contain toxins such as heavy metals, plasticizers, fluorocarbons, and formaldehyde. Sustainable dyes can also be water or plant based, or use less water than conventional dyeing methods.
