Girlfriend Collective

Good things come to those who don’t waste

Who They Are

Girlfriend Collective was founded on the principle of being the best of the best without sacrificing style, sustainability, or quality. It all started with a simple pair of black leggings. If you shared the post on your social media and paid for the shipping, you’d get them for free. High quality, sustainable leggings for the price of shipping- too good to be true, right? Wrong. This tactic proved worthwhile for founders and husband and wife, Ellie and Quang, whose sustainable empire has now grown to include leggings, sports bras, shorts, jackets, and more, all offered in a variety of inclusive sizes. With Quang’s background in sustainability and mechanical engineering and Ellie’s creative vision, Girlfriend Collective was born and has truly blossomed. Today, Girlfriend Collective is a hip, diverse, size-inclusive, transparent, and ethical powerhouse in a sustainable fashion.

Why We Like Them

Girlfriend Collective prides itself on being transparent, taking care of the people who make your clothes, and never putting the bottom line before what’s best for the planet. Now there’s a mission statement we can get behind! That means that transparency and sustainability aren’t an afterthought, rather they are woven into every aspect of Girlfriend’s process. Compared to a traditional pair of leggings, GF leggings divert 25 water bottles from a landfill, save 18.61 lbs. of CO2, and save 3.11 gallons of water. It doesn’t get much better than that!

The bottles for your Girlfriend Collective leggings are processed in a Taiwanese government-certified factory, meaning the factory has high-security measures which subject it to accountability regarding how much plastic is taken in, shipped out, and where it came from. Girlfriend Collective’s entire collection feel and fit amazing for all shapes and sizes of bodies because of the time that is put into the design and production of their products. Using ECONYL® fiber from recycled fishing materials in some of their other gear cuts down on the fossil-fuel intensive production of traditional nylon.

Girlfriend has also tackled the issue of textile dyeing. In traditional textile dyeing processes, toxic wastewater is often discarded with no second thought, harming the ecosystems and communities that surround them. In Girlfriend’s facility, every drop is sent to an on-site OKEO-certified wastewater treatment plant where it is cleaned to Taiwanese standards and released, cleanly, back into the environment. Even the mud that is created during this process is repurposed in a sustainable way, sent to a paving facility and used to create paving stones for the community. They have nothing to hide because nothing is overlooked in their production process. When you’re using the best practices, why not brag about them?

Some or all of the energy used to make this product is produced via renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydropower.

Products that are labeled as BPA free do not contain Bisphenol A, a chemical commonly found in plastic products. Studies on BPA exposure have shown that high levels of BPA could lead to hormone disruption, effects on behavior and brain function, reproductive problems, breast cancer, heart disease, infertility, and more.

This product is packaged or shipped in materials that contain recycled content.

EconylÂŽ is a branded process that utilizes nylon contained in post-consumer sources like fishing nets and carpets, and pre-consumer sources such as industrial plastic, fabric, and yarn scraps. These materials are salvaged and cleaned, then sent to a special facility to be broken down and respun into new fibers. Their special “depolymerization” process breaks down the material in a unique way that maintains its structural integrity, so that it can be reused to make quality products! Companies use this material to create new products like swimwear, sports clothing, carpets, and more.

Recycled nylon salvages post-industrial and post-consumer nylon scraps in order to create new items. The scraps are cleaned, sorted, stripped down, and separated into fibers before being transformed into completely new products. This process avoids the energy and resource extraction required to produce virgin fibers, and takes advantage of the efforts used to create the item initially. Recycling nylon provides a second life for materials which might otherwise end up polluting the ocean or buried in a landfill. Recycled nylon can be made from salvaged fishing nets as well as carpet and scraps from clothing production.

Recycled PET utilizes salvaged post-industrial PET scraps and post-consumer products such as water bottles and other plastic containers. These plastics are dried, crushed, and spun into yarn in order to create recycled PET fabric, or polyester. By providing a use for recycled plastics, companies encourage recycling programs worldwide, while adding new value to discarded items. Currently, over half of virgin PET production goes towards making textiles, so by utilizing recycled PET, post-consumer materials are both diverting waste while taking the place of raw materials. This helps to reduce the demand for the extraction of oil, as well as energy used to produce new synthetic fibers.

Recycling is the process of taking an otherwise-discarded item or material and cleaning, sorting, and breaking it down into its basic form (such as fibers or pellets). This material is then used to produce new items. Recycling keeps useful materials from being discarded in landfills, prevents resource extraction due to the creation of new materials, and provides a new life for used items. Recycling can utilize both pre-consumer waste (materials left over from production) or post-consumer materials (used clothing, empty water bottles, etc). This product is made from recycled content.
