Bit of Meraki

Thoughtfully Designed, Consciously Crafted

Who They Are

MERAKI means “doing something with soul, creativity, and love.”

Six years ago, the Bit of Meraki founders worked for a social enterprise that took them to remote communities and villages in India in order to create employment opportunities and improve living standards. Over time, their lives and careers changed, but their passion for working with communities and making positive social impaact did not. This led to the conception of Bit of Meraki. This idea would allow the founders to once again engage with different global communities and celebrate unique cultures by empowering them to be creative and design inspiring crafts. By bringing custom, handmade items to the global market, Bit of Meraki hopes to inspire and empower community artisans.

Why We Like Them

Bit of Meraki partners with skilled and talented artisans from remote villages or disadvantaged communities in places such as India and Africa. Bit of Meraki empowers these communities by providing opportunities for people to use their skills in order to support their families with fair wages. All of Bit of Meraki’s products are handmade using sustainable, natural materials like jute and cotton. They also ensure that their colorful craftsmanship is done only with clean and natural dyes, all ethically sourced from around the globe.

EarthHero loves supporting companies that empower underprivileged communities to show off their skills and receive fair wages for doing so, but Bit of Meraki takes it even one step further. Every Bit of Meraki purchase contributes “charity:water” which supplies clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

We support small businesses and craftspeople who create each of their products with care. Handmade products are generally produced on a small scale, without the use of large energy consuming factories and production facilities. Buying handmade helps support art, communities, and people’s livelihoods.

We support safe and fair labor practices when producing sustainable products. This company cares for their workers by fostering a safe work environment and providing their employees with fair wage.

This company donates a portion of their time or profits to charitable efforts in their community or abroad.

Some or all of the ingredients or materials used to produce this item have been sustainably harvested. Sustainable practices involve managing land in ways that prevent overharvesting, preserve the natural ecosystems and animal habitats, and ensure a sustainable harvest for the future.

Companies can adopt multiple practices to dye their textiles and products in a more environmentally safe way. Low impact dyes usually do not contain toxins such as heavy metals, plasticizers, fluorocarbons, and formaldehyde. Sustainable dyes can also be water or plant based, or use less water than conventional dyeing methods.
