Looking for locally made and organic personal care that comes in minimal plastic packaging…. and also supports pollinators? Look no further. Moon Valley Organics is one of our favorite beauty & care brands – and is on a mission to change the way companies interact with key pollinators like bees. Read on to learn about their farm in Washington, their innovative products, and how they’re supporting pollinators with every step.
Moon Valley Organics Farm
Moon Valley Organics founders Kim and Aaron Otto were a hardworking vegetable farming family who dreamt of an organic skin care company created for those with skin conditions – but without the harsh ingredients and toxins that pharmaceutical skincare companies relied upon. They used their community to connect with local farmers markets, and began to innovate their body care products from natural and organic ingredients. In no time, they had their lotion bars, bar soaps, muscle rubs, and lip balms, and began selling at the world famous Pike Place Market in Seattle. Named for the sustainable vegetable farm near North Bend, Washington, that gave them their start, Moon Valley Organics was born.
Today, the Moon Valley Organics farm and pollinator sanctuary is in Deming, Washington – an area with tons of family farms and wilderness. There they grow the sustainably farmed and organic herbs that go into their products using permaculture practices. They also dry, process, and package those herbs on-site! What they can’t grow for their products, they source from local organic farms and suppliers who support fair trade, are sustainably certified, or are part of the Rainforest Action Network (RAN).
Certifications & Partners
In 2009, Moon Valley Organics hit a major milestone – they became USDA Certified Organic. This means that they’ve met strict 3rd party rules and regulations around water usage, fertilizers, chemicals, pesticides, and even production methods on their farm. They’ve been certified to use no GMOs, no radiation, and no added toxins of any sort – just clean, organic farming methods.
The same year they received their USDA Certification, Moon Valley began working with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), a group dedicated to helping aspiring organic farmers through education and hands-on experiences. A WWOOF host provides accommodations and food in exchange for labor, which includes tasks like sowing seeds, harvesting herbs, building fences, and so much more! Although the experience differs from host to host, it allows WWOOFers to experience permaculture and biodynamic farms, and get into nature. At the Moon Valley farm, WWOOFers help with harvesting calendula, watering fields, aiding with product, and even some beekeeping!
All Moon Valley products are 100% cruelty free, and they are Leaping Bunny Certified. This means that they meet The Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals set by the Leaping Bunny organization, ensuring there is no animal testing in all stages of product development. They are reviewed on an annual basis, and are open to independent audits!
Some Moon Valley products contain palm oil – a potentially controversial ingredient. But, they’ve gone the extra mile to ensure 100% of the palm they use is sustainably sourced and certified by Palm Done Right. This ensures the palm oil is 100% organic, deforestation free, wildfire friendly, and fair for the communities and farmers that are involved in all steps of production. Moon Valley is also, like EarthHero, a Certified B Corporation! This means that they’ve passed rigorous 3rd party standards for social, environmental, economic, and legal transparency and accountability. As part of a network of companies using business for good, they are leading the way in making conscious commerce the new normal.
A major initiative of Moon Valley Organics that sets them apart from other certified organic farms and businesses is their passion project: pollinator awareness, education, and protection. They have a 4-acre plot on their farm in Deming dedicated to growing pollinator friendly plants, acting as a pollinator sanctuary. This means pollinators like bees, birds, and bats who pollinator flowers while collecting nectar are able to thrive – which is important, as they have a key role in the lives of nearly 75% of the crops we rely on.
They also donate 10% of their profits towards nonprofits that focus on pollinator health and protection. Most recently they donated to The Pesticide Action Network, and The People & Pollinators Action Network! They also use their platform to educate others on how to protect pollinators in their local community.
Moon Valley Organics believes in the power of nature, and works with a variety of herbalists and alchemists to craft their products from the best ingredients. They work with a Naturopathic doctor (ND), Internal Medicine doctor (MD), Oriental Medicine practitioner (MSOM), and skilled herbalists to concoct their formulas. They also focus on minimal plastic packaging that is BPA-free, 100% recyclable, and contains a high percentage of post-consumer recycled materials. Let’s jump into some of our favorite products below!
